SPRING HIGHLIGHTS : High School Baseball

Cleveland 13, Taft 9--Mike Arunzullo was 5 for 5, including a home run, and had six runs batted in to lead Cleveland (2-4). Taft (1-5) was led by Todd Grayson, who was 2 for 3 with a home run.

San Fernando 16, Birmingham 7--San Fernando’s Frank Zavala was 4 for 4 with one RBI.

El Camino Real 7, Reseda 6--Ray Sabaoo singled in Jim Biscailiz from third in the top of the eighth for the winning run for El Camino Real. Reseda had tied the game in the seventh when Donnie Grant crashed a grand slam with two outs. El Camino Real is 4-2 in league. Reseda dropped to 3-3.

Polytechnic 9, Hollywood 2--Hans Hekking pitched four innings in relief, striking out eight, and Danny Gill was 2 for 3 with a home run for Polytechnic.

Sylmar 11, Verdugo Hills 2--Biff McGahan and Tony Taisacan combined for three homers and eight RBIs as Sylmar rolled in the East Valley League game at Verdugo Hills. Rick Diaz supported the power surge with three doubles for Sylmar. Verdugo Hills dropped to 3-6 in league. Sylmar is 6-4.

Oakwood 17, Cal Prep 8--Robbie Anker and Matt Cramer both had bases-loaded doubles to lead the slugfest for Oakwood at Balboa Park in Encino. Cramer had four RBIs in the Liberty League game to keep Oakwood unbeaten (4-0 league, 5-0 overall).

California Christian 10, Pilgrim Christian 8--California Christian managed only four hits, two by Mitch Cizek, but Sean Jackson stole four bases and scored two runs to beat Pilgrim in a Heritage League game. California Christian is 5-2 in league.

Temple Christian 14, Simi Lutheran 0--Simi Lutheran gave up 12 hits in a battle for first place in the Heritage League. Temple Christian is 7-0 in league and Simi Lutheran is 5-2.

College Baseball

Allan Hancock 5, Moorpark 3--Moorpark’s Jon Egertson and Brian Peters both were 3 for 4 in a losing cause. Hancock scored the winning run in the sixth inning. A groundball to Moorpark shortstop Jeff Hoover took a bad bounce, striking Hoover in the ear. The ball went into the outfield, scoring two runs and sent Hoover to the hospital for stitches.

The Master’s College 8, Azusa Pacific 7--The Master’s Joe Stadum was 3 for 4 with one RBI in an NAIA District 3 contest. The Master’s is 6-12 in District 3, and 16-24 overall, while Azusa drops to 10-4, and 12-22.

Tim Kane, with his second double of the game, led off the fifth inning and scored when Adam Dennis singled to left field.

High School Softball

Hart 4, Alhambra 3--Chris Yates scored the winning run for the Indians in the Foothill League game at Alhambra. Yates opened up the seventh with a single, stole second, moved to third on a fielder’s choice and then scored on an Alhambra throwing error. Hart is 2-2 in league and 9-5 overall and Alhambra is 0-4 in league.

Burroughs 1, San Gabriel 0--Christy Alves (15-1) pitched her third no-hitter for Burroughs, 4-0 in Foothill League, 15-1 overall. San Gabriel is 1-3 and 7-7.

Burbank 10, Schurr 0--Burbank’s Laura Robinson was 3 for 3 with a two-run homer and three RBIs. Burbank is 4-0 in Foothill League and 14-2 overall while Schurr drops to 1-3 and 3-8.

Van Nuys 14, Polytechnic 13--Michelle Kosro and Linda Fisher had home runs to lead Van Nuys in an East Valley League victory. Poly drops to 0-2 in league.

Chatsworth 12, Monroe 0--Tina Shimozo was 3 for 4 for Chatsworth, 2-0 in the North Valley League. Monroe drops to 0-2.

Santa Ynez 13, Moorpark 2--Moorpark (3-9 in Tri-Valley League) scored both of its runs in the second inning.

Calabasas 16, Agoura 1--Calabasas’ Lisa Morris was 3 for 4 and teammate Michelle Marcione was 2 for 4 with 2 RBIs in the Frontier League contest.

L.A. Baptist 9, Marshall Fundamental 0--Sue Duane was 2 for 2 and scored two runs in the L.A. Baptist’s (6-1) Alpha League contest, and teammate Michelle Ruffner (8-5) struck out eight.

Village Christian 16, Webb 0--Pam Hale was 4 for 5 for Village Christian. Michelle Vail pitched her second no-hitter in two weeks striking out 11 batters and walking only one.

Cleveland 18, Reseda 6--The two West Valley League teams combined for 43 hits at Cleveland, but the Cavaliers got the best of it as Diane Nichols smacked two homers and had three RBIs.

Both teams are 1-1 in league.

High School Volleyball

Harvard def. Culver City 15-6, 15-9, 15-8--Harvard (11-1 in Ocean League, 12-1 overall) clinched a playoff spot with the victory. Mike Lowe had six blocks and Chris Abbott ran the offense effectively for Harvard.

Boys Track

Alemany 79, Crespi 48--Scoop Augustus won the 440-yard dash in 50.06, and the long jump, 21-0 1/2 for Alemany, 2-3 in Del Rey League, 6-0 overall. Alemany’s Troy Vigil won the 100-yard dash in 10.0 and the 220-yard dash in 23.1. Crespi’s Russell White won the triple jump in 45-7.

Burroughs 95, San Gabriel 31--Bruce Luizzi of Burroughs won the 100-yard dash (11.4), the 220-yard dash (23.2), and was part of the victorious 440-yard relay team (45.8), and the winning mile relay team. Frank Mersola won the 120-high hurdles (16.5), and the 330-low hurdles (42.5).
