San Diego Prep Baseball : Mount Carmel Tops Poway, Improves to 6-0

Share

Mount Carmel High scrapped for every run it could Wednesday, and Poway booted almost every chance it had in losing, 6-4, to the No. 2-ranked Sundevils at Poway.

Mount Carmel (6-0, 16-4) remained two games ahead of Orange Glen in the Palomar League. Poway (3-3, 10-7) is tied for third place, three games back.

“We hung in there,” said Sam Blalock, Mount Carmel coach. “We played aggressive and even used a squeeze play. We work on not using the squeeze.”

Things went well for Mount Carmel from the beginning.

Rich Hooper walked to start the game, stole second and reached third on a single by Ronnie Kelly. Miah Bradbury drove in Hooper with a sacrifice fly to center for the game’s first run.

In the third, Poway loaded the bases with no outs but could get only one run as Phil Plantier hit into a double play and Allen Tremble flew out.

With two out in the third, Ronnie Kelly hit a solo home run to put the Sundevils back on top, 2-1.

Sundevil John Krainock squeezed in Pete Cowen in the fourth, and two batters later Mike Limtiaco doubled in Tommy Cheek to put Mount Carmel up 4-1.

The Titans battled back in the fifth to a 4-4 tie when Dominick Johnson singled in Tremble with two outs.

Johnson, Poway’s starting pitcher, got into trouble when he gave up back-to-back doubles to Kelly and Bradbury to start the fifth. Two singles after the doubles drove in the deciding runs.

“We weren’t at the top of our game today,” said John Harmon, Poway coach. “It was a tough game. Johnson didn’t pitch poorly, but a few too many pitches were too high.”
