San Diego Prep Baseball Roundup : Gay Closes In on Record; Santana Wins

Jeff Gay, who had two hits and scored four times in No. 1-ranked Santana’s 10-2 victory over El Cajon Monday, is one hit short of tying Gar Miller’s San Diego Section record of 128 hits in a career. Miller set the record at University High (1980-83).

Santana (14-1 in league, 22-2 overall) has won 21 of its last 22 games. El Cajon is 1-14, 1-17. The host Sultans struck early with three in the first and that was all Scott Jensen (2-1) needed. Dale Henson hit his sixth home run of the season in the fifth inning with one runner on base. Tommy Kolinek went 2 for 3 with three runs batted in.

In other Grossmont League action:

Granite Hills 12, Grossmont 9--Visiting Granite Hills had 14 hits, including four homers, against six Grossmont pitchers. Todd Parker hit a solo homer in the second as Granite Hills struck for five runs. Grossmont (8-7, 12-12) tied the score, 6-6, in the fifth, but Granite Hills (10-5, 14-9) came back with six in its half of the sixth.

Valhalla 5, El Cajon 4--No. 3-ranked Valhalla scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the seventh to tie, 4-4. In the eighth, Justin Post lined a 1-2 pitch down the left-field line to score Rob Sharp with the game-winner.

Helix 6, Mount Miguel 5--Host Helix (6-9, 8-15) had a 6-1 lead going into the seventh inning and hung on for the victory over Mount Miguel (6-8-1, 11-12-1).
