San Diego Prep Baseball : Bradbury’s Homer Gets Mount Carmel Going, 6-2

Catcher Miah Bradbury’s home run broke a 2-2 tie, and second-ranked Mount Carmel High School then rolled to a 6-2 Palomar League victory over No. 6 Fallbrook Tuesday at Mount Carmel.

Bradbury led off the sixth with a homer to left-center, his sixth of the year. The Sundevils then added three more runs on singles by Mike Limpiaco and Rich Hooper in the inning.

Pitcher Joe Comer hit a 380-foot homer to account for Fallbrook’s runs. Comer drove in Bill Dunckel, who had two of the Warriors’ four hits.

Tom Cheek (7-2) pitched 6 innings for the win. Ed VanAelstyn got the final two outs for the save. VanAelstyn inherited a 2-0 count on the first batter he faced and proceeded to walk him to put runners on first and second. Van Aelstyn walked another to load the bases with one out but retired the next two batters.

Limpiaco had three hits, Bradbury was 2 for 2, and Hooper was 2 for 4 with two RBIs for Mount Carmel (11-0 in league, 22-4 overall). Fallbrook dropped to 7-4 and 19-5.

In other Palomar League games:

Orange Glen 7, Poway 6--Brett Salisbury singled home Paul Temprendola from second to snap a 6-6 tie and give Orange Glen (6-5, 14-9) the win. The win puts Orange Glen alone in third place, as Poway (5-6, 12-11) drops to fourth in the league. Mike Dean was 2 for 3, including a second-inning solo homer, for Orange Glen.

Bonita Vista 15, Hilltop 4--David Woodhouse had three hits, including a solo home run, and drove in three runs to lead the No. 7-ranked Barons (9-3, 17-7) into sole possession of first place in the Mesa League. Doug Piper also drove in three runs for Bonita Vista, which leads Sweetwater by one game with one to play. Hilltop, the defending section 2-A champion, fell to 4-8, 7-13. Bonita Vista committed 11 errors but overcame them thanks to the pitching of Paul Harris, who went five innings to pick up the win. Bonita Vista had 20 hits.

Chula Vista 5, Sweetwater 1--Conan Murphy and Brian Murphy each had RBIs as Chula Vista (6-6, 10-12) continued to play spoiler with the win at Sweetwater. On Friday, the Spartans beat Montgomery to knock the Aztecs out of a share of first place. Now Chula Vista has knocked Sweetwater (8-4, 11-12) out of first, a game behind Bonita Vista. Chula Vista held a 2-1 lead before scoring three times in the seventh to win its second straight after five straight losses.

Montgomery 5, Southwest 0--Lee Langevin pitched a three-hitter and Alex Gill drove in three runs to lead the Aztecs (8-4, 15-7) at Southwest. The victory moved Montgomery into a second-place tie with Sweetwater with one game remaining. Sweetwater plays Hilltop Thursday, and Montgomery plays league-leading Bonita Vista Friday.

Castle Park 3, Coronado 1--Jose Palos and Henry Monreal combined on a three-hitter as the Trojans (6-6, 12-10) beat Coronado and wrapped up a playoff berth. Palos helped his own cause with a two-run homer in the fourth inning. CITY WESTERN LEAGUE

University 8, Kearny 5 (8 innings)--Mike Eggleston pitched a scoreless bottom of the eighth inning to give University the win in a game that was partly replayed after the CIF upheld a protest by University Coach Dick Serrano. When the teams first played, Kearny rallied for three runs in the eighth to post an 8-7 win. But Serrano protested, saying an umpire’s mistake had cut short his team’s two-run rally in the top of the eighth. The protest was upheld and the game was continued Tuesday with University leading, 7-5, in the top of the eighth. Mike Hasting singled in one run and then Eggleston shut out Kearny in the replayed bottom of the inning. With the win, the Dons (9-5, 13-10) clinched a 2-A playoff berth. AVOCADO LEAGUE

Carlsbad 4, Oceanside 1--Robert Wurster’s double in the fourth scored Mike Cummins from second for host Carlsbad (7-4, 14-11). Oceanside pitcher Henry Jimenez, who was credited with the loss, allowed only one earned run in seven innings. Jimenez also hit a solo homer in the first.

Briefly: Torrey Pines beat No.8-ranked San Marcos, 9-1, in a nonleague game; San Pasqual defeated El Camino, 11-2, in an Avocado League game.
