The purse for the Canadian Open golf tournament this year has been increased to $612,000, a jump of more than $143,000, organizers have announced.

“This year’s increase is the largest in the 82-year history of the Canadian Open,” said Dick Grimm, director of professional golf for the Royal Canadian Golf Assn. “This significant increase marks the third consecutive year that the prize money has been raised to keep the Open in the forefront of other major championships.”

The tournament will be held June 26 to 29 at Glen Abbey over the course designed by Jack Nicklaus. The winner will receive approximately $110,000.

Wilmat Tennyson, president of the sponsoring Imperial Tobacco Ltd., said “our commitment is to keep the Canadian Open competitive with all the big tournaments on the PGA Tour and this means increasing the purse just as other tournaments are doing.”

This year’s purse is larger than all but a handful of events on the PGA Tour.
