A 14-month-old boy was critically burned over 70% of his body Monday evening, when fire erupted in a Silver Lake area apartment house, where someone was apparently cleaning automobile parts with gasoline near a water heater.

The gasoline fumes were believed ignited by the heater’s open pilot light, Los Angeles Fire Department officials said.

Two unidentified adults reportedly received burns on their hands rescuing the boy from the flames that erupted on the back porch of the building at 3956 Marathon St., Fire Department spokesman Jim Wells said.

Three firefighters were burned on their arms, necks and hands.

The boy was being treated at Childrens Hospital. The others were taken to Hollywood Presbyterian Hospital.

None of the names of the victims was immediately available.

The fire did an estimated $16,000 worth of damage to the apartment building, Wells said.
