BRIEFLY : 6 Valley Dodgers Earn All-Tournament Honors

Miles Morris, whose eighth-inning home run helped the San Fernando Valley Dodgers win the National Baseball Congress State Southern Section Tournament, is one of six Dodgers selected to the all-tournament team. Joining the former Glendale College outfielder were pitcher Randy Cina (Cal State Northridge), outfielder Mike Solomon (CSUN), third baseman Rick Allen (Calabasas High, Fresno State), catcher Mark Grafitti (Hoover High, Loyola Marymount) and second baseman Perry Husband (CSUN).

Other Valley-area players picked to the all-tournament team were outfielder Charlie Fiacco and third baseman Scott Cline of the second-place Ventura County Royals. Both players attended Camarillo High and played as freshmen this spring at UCLA. Glen Turnipseed, a second baseman from Moorpark College who played for the third-place Simi Valley Raiders, also was selected.

Pete Maldonado of the Simi Valley team was signed by the Philadelphia Phillies on Friday after he pitched in a 7-0 loss to Ventura. Maldonado attended Cal State Stanislaus.

Morris’ eighth-inning solo home run broke a 3-3 tie in the championship game at Ventura College on Saturday, and Valley went on to beat Ventura County, 6-3. Solomon had tied the game an inning earlier when he tripled with two outs and stole home.

The tournament championship earned Valley (13-4) a berth in the NBC World Series, which begins Aug. 1 in Wichita, Kan.

Top ARC Teams to Play at Valley College

The top two American Roundball Corp. teams, Mid-Valley and Ventura County, will play each other Saturday in a high school all-star basketball at Valley news,11p6

College. Mid-Valley (16-1) features Simi Valley’s Don MacLean, Taft’s Kevin Franklin, and Sean Higgins and Chris Mills of Fairfax.

Ventura County features Gary Gray from Granada Hills and Westlake’s Paul Keenan, Rick Welch and Dave Heckmann.

The 8 p.m. game will be preceded by a 6:30 p.m. game between ARC Los Angeles and ARC San Fernando Valley. Calabasas’ Steve Ward and Kennedy’s Clarence Williams are members of the San Fernando Valley team.

All ARC teams will compete in two upcoming tournaments. The first is scheduled for next week at UCLA’s Pauley Pavilion, running Tuesday through Saturday.

The second is scheduled at Nevada Las Vegas from July 21 to July 25.

Free-Agent Baseball Tryout Set at UCLA

The major league baseball scouting bureau will hold a free-agent tryout camp Friday at 9 a.m. at UCLA’s Jackie Robinson Stadium. The camp is open to all players aged 16 to 25; participants must provide their own equipment. American Legion players must bring a note from their coaches giving them permission to participate. Brinton Helps U.S. to Cycling Record

American cyclist David Brinton of North Hollywood was part of the team that broke a U.S. cycling record Wednesday in the Goodwill Games at Moscow. Brinton competed in the four-kilometer team pursuit in which the Americans finished fourth in 4:21.273. The winning Soviet Union team finished in 4:12.830, breaking the world record of 4:14.264.

Brinton was sixth in Tuesday’s one-kilometer individual race, finishing in 1:06.330, almost three seconds behind winner Uldis Bremanis of the Soviet Union.

Soviet-born Irina Rubenshtein, who will be a sophomore at Agoura High in the fall, tied for 19th in the all-around rhythmic gymnastics with 38.30 points.
