Orange County Roundup : Kiraly Set for Seal Beach Volleyball Play

Karch Kiraly, a member of the gold medal-winning 1984 U.S. Olympic volleyball team, heads a field of 31 two-man beach volleyball teams in the $20,000 Miller Lite Orange County Open at the Seal Beach Pier Saturday and Sunday.

Kiraly, 25, joins the beach competition fresh from a U.S. National Team exhibition tour against the Soviet Union. He will team with John Hanley in the tournament.

Competition will be Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The final is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. Sunday.

Other teams include defending Orange County Open champions Singin Smith and Randy Stoklos, as well as current World Champions Mike Dodd and Tim Hovland.

The eighth North Huntington Beach Soccer Tournament will be at various sites in the Huntington Beach area Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

The Division I boys’ gold teams will play at Ocean View High School, beginning with the first round of preliminaries Saturday at 8 a.m. and the finals Monday at 11 a.m.

The Division I boys’ silver teams will play at Fountain Valley Recreation Center all day Saturday and Sunday with the final Monday at 9 a.m. at Ocean View High.

The Division I girls’ gold teams will play at Marina High School all day Saturday and Sunday with the finals Monday at 11 a.m. at the same site.

More than 3,000 athletes representing 184 teams are expected to participate in the three-day tournament.

El Toro High School is seeking walk-on coaches for many of the school’s teams for the 1986-87 season.

A head soccer coach and two assistants, an assistant wrestling coach, an assistant volleyball coach and an assistant track coach are needed for the boys’ teams.

A head track and field coach and assistant, an assistant volleyball coach, an assistant basketball coach and an assistant soccer coach are being sought for the girls’ teams.

Softball player Chris Makimoto of Rancho Santiago College has accepted an athletic scholarship to attend Florida State University.

Makimoto joins teammates Laura Janzen, Kim Martin and Lorraine Kalehuawehe as players from the state champion Dons who have received athletic scholarships to four-year schools.

Janzen and Martin will attend Cal State Long Beach. Kalehuawehe will attend Hawaii.
