Roundup : Another Upset Win for Poway; Defense Smothers Mira Mesa

The Poway High School football team proved that its upset win last week over Granite Hills was no fluke Friday night, defeating defending Eastern League champion Mira Mesa, 13-0, at Poway.

Senior quarterback Ty Nichols completed 14 of 21 passes for 188 yards and 1 touchdown, a 53-yarder to wide receiver Mike Comier, and John Ashworth kicked a pair of field goals to help the Titans.

But the real story of the win was the Poway defense.

The Titans, who limited Granite Hills to just one touchdown in a 13-7 win last Friday, limited Mira Mesa to just one first down and and 46 yards of total offense. Last week, Mira Mesa’s Essex Burton gained 204 yards in a 13-7 loss to Monte Vista. He was held to just 25 yards by Poway.

The Titans, who play in the Palomar League, are now 2-0 under first-year coach Brad Elrod. Mira Mesa fell to 0-2.

In other nonleague games:

Chula Vista 43, Mar Vista 0--Anthony Garcia rushed for two touchdowns and caught a pass for another score, and Sione Fehoko rushed for two touchdowns to lead No. 7-ranked Chula Vista (2-0) to the victory at home. Garcia scored on runs of 2 and 15 yards and caught a 2-yard touchdown pass from Brian Murphy, who also threw a scoring pass of 33 yards to Eric Daniels. Mar Vista is 0-2.

El Capitan 35, Santana 28--Dan Freeman scored three touchdowns on runs of 1, 1 and 7 yards and Rubin Pellez returned an interception 10 yards for another score to lead El Capitan (1-1) past Santana (1-1) at El Capitan. Bill Reed scored two touchdowns for Santana, one on a 6-yard pass reception and another on a 1-yard run.

University City 28, St. Augustine 0--Paul MacRenato, the 1985 Western League offensive player of the year, rushed for two touchdowns and running mate Darrin Wagner added two others to lead University City (1-0) at San Diego High. MacRenato scored on runs of 5 and 50 yards and Wagner scored on runs of 10 and 93 yards. The 93-yard run came after University City recovered Charlie Applegate’s fumble on the seven-yard line. St. Augustine (0-2) threatened at the end of the first half, driving down to the one-yard line before time ran out.

Crawford 25, Serra 0--The Crawford defense intercepted four passes, including two by defensive back Lou Coons, as it limited Serra (1-1) to 58 yards total offense at Serra. Crawford (1-1) was led by running back Alonzo Lathan’s 106 yards on 18 carries. Quarterback David Edrozo (9 for 17, 166 yards) connected on touchdown passes to Dewey Brown (33 yards) and Chris Chang (5 yards).

Montgomery 20, Mount Miguel 14--Quarterback Troy Beale hit Rodney Doss on a 63-yard touchdown pass with 1:49 remaining to win at Montgomery. The pass capped a 77-yard drive in five plays. Kevin Crawford rushed for 140 yards on 17 carries, including a 27-yard touchdown run in the second period to pace Montgomery (1-1). Junior linebacker Luis Rodriguez, with two fumble recoveries and two quarterback sacks, paced the Montgomery defense, which limited Mount Miguel (1-1) to six yards rushing.

Grossmont 7, Helix 7--Helix Tim Zeddies scored on a quarterback sneak late in the third period to tie the game at Grossmont. Grossmont had scored on a quarterback sneak by Mark Stillwater in the second period to open scoring. Both teams are 1-0-1.

Carlsbad 28, Clairemont 0--Chris Shiarappa scored three touchdowns as Carlsbad (1-1) beat Clairemont (0-2) with a touchdown in every quarter. Shiarappa caught a 7-yard pass from Karl Molinar for his first touchdown and scored his other on runs of 7 and 29 yards. Molinar, who was 14 for 25 but had three interceptions, put Carlsbad on the board in the first quarter with an 8-yard pass to receiver Eddie Collins.

Fallbrook 20, San Marcos 20--Fallbrook quarterback Scott Barrick threw for 385 yards but it could not get his team the win. Fallbrook took a 12-7 halftime lead on an 18-yard touchdown from Barrick to Bill Dunckel, coupled with a safety and a 36-yard Dunckel field goal. San Marcos’ Rick Ebert led his team back in the second half with touchdown passes to Vaughn Webb and Jim Jennings. However, Abel Nari’s point after kick attempt failed, allowing Fallbrook to tie the game late in the fourth quarter on a 73-yard touchdown pass from Barrick to Robert Sherman, followed by a two-point conversion pass from Barrick to Darrow Nelson.

Point Loma 7, Bonita Vista 4--Kelby Donney’s 15-yard touchdown run for Point Loma (2-0) was the game’s only offensive scoring play as the two teams managed only 116 yards each in total offense. Bonita Vista (0-2) scored its first safety in the second quarter when the snap to punter Francisco Bogarin sailed into the end zone. The other safety came in the game’s final seconds as Bogarin ran out of the end zone to run out the clock.

San Pasqual 6, Mount Carmel 0--Running back David Williams capped San Pasqual’s first drive of the game with a six-yard touchdown run and San Pasqual’s defense held on to give the Eagles their second win of the season against no losses. “It wasn’t pretty but our defense is playing awfully well,” said first-year San Pasqual Coach Mike Dolan. “Our kids are small (the tallest player on the team is 6-foot 1-inches), but they really fly around out there.” Mount Carmel is 1-1.

University 20, Hoover 13--James Wilson’s eight-yard touchdown run with 47 seconds remaining snapped a 13-13 tie to give University (2-0) the win at home. University’s Martin Correia ran for 196 yards on 20 carries and rushed for two touchdowns. Wilson gained 165 yards on 26 carries. The University defense limited Hoover (1-1) to minus 13 yards rushing. But Hoover quarterback Michael Walker was 12 of 20 for 255 yards and two touchdowns, including a 65-yard scoring pass to John Roots.

Oceanside 16, Santa Barbara High 6--Junior Seau caught 6 passes for 92 yards, including a 17-yard touchdown pass from Rocky Aukuso, to lead Oceanside (1-1) to the win at Santa Barbara.

Morse 20, El Camino 6--George Jackson rushed for 130 yards and one touchdown and Melvin Maxwell threw a 33-yard touchdown pass to Reggie Webb to lead the fifth-ranked Tigers (3-0) to the win at El Camino. Jackson scored on a 52-yard run to up Morse’s lead to 14-0 in the second quarter. Maxwell, along with his touchdown pass, also ran 12 yards for another Morse scored. El Camino is 0-2.

Hilltop 7, Castle Park 6-- Robbie DePerro passed to Ron White for a three-yard touchdown on the first play of the fourth quarter and Henry Negrete added the extra point as Hilltop (1-1) won at home. Castle Park (1-1) held a 6-0 lead after Carlos Valdivia field goals of 25 and 22 yards. Castle Park tailback David Carpenter, who ran for 175 yards last week, was held to 15 yards in 13 carries and was forced to play quarterback when the Trojans’ top two quarterbacks were injured.

San Diego 47, Marian 19--San Diego (1-1) rushed for 448 yards in the win at Marian (1-1). Damon Carson rushed for 157 yards in 7 carries and scored on runs of 13 and 80 yards. Jimmy Kegler added 153 yards in 5 carries and scored on runs of 74 and 32 yards. Carlos Borquz had 86 yards in 9 carries and caught the only pass Armando Ramirez threw for a 36-yard score. Dan Chang added a 21-yard scoring run. Marian, which trailed 41-6 at the half, scored 13 points in the final quarter.
