STATISTICS WATCH : 40 Is Not Quite Enough: Canyon Is No. 2 for Once

Streaks: With 40 straight victories, Canyon High has the second longest current winning streak in the nation among high school football teams. East St. Louis, Ill., has won 43 in a row, including three this season. John Curtis Christian of River Ridge, La., had a streak of 43 wins snapped a week ago.

Passing: Under the NCAA passing efficiency formula, Burroughs quarterback Jeff Barrett’s performance would score a 215.1. . . .

Three teams completed just one pass while winning last week. Chris Lemieux of Westlake completed 1 of 6 passes for 13 yards in a 13-10 win over Lompoc. Rick Negrete of Sylmar completed 1 of 4 passes for five yards in a 12-6 win over Verdugo Hills. North Hollywood’s James Crump threw five passes in a 14-6 win over Hollywood. Three were incomplete, one was intercepted and the single completion went for minus five yards.

Rushing: Albert Fann accounted for 257 of Cleveland’s 290 yards. Fann rushed for 243 yards and two touchdowns on 28 carries and caught 2 passes for 14 yards. . . . Russell White of Crespi has gained 259 yards on 14 carries (an 18.5 average per carry). Bill Phillips of Newbury Park is right behind at 249 yards, but has carried 54 times for a 4.6 average).

Scoring: Chad Zeigler of Canyon is the Valley scoring leader with six touchdowns. Last season Zeigler scored seven touchdowns in 14 games.

Defense: Crespi has allowed minus 53 yards rushing in two games. . . . North Hollywood held Hollywood to minus 47 yards rushing on 15 carries. . . . St. Genevieve held Village Christian to minus 12 yards on 25 carries. . . . Tim Blakeley of Newbury Park had three interceptions and returned one 51 yards for a touchdown. . . . Buckley has been outscored, 90-0, in two games.
