Palomar College, unranked last week, has moved up to seventh in the Southern California Community College football poll.

The Comets relied on defense to defeat San Diego Mesa, 17-15, in their opening Mission Conference game Saturday.

Linebacker Will Reed, a freshman from Las Vegas High School, had an interception, recovered a fumble and made eight solo tackles. Reed also blocked a field-goal attempt to set up the winning touchdown drive.
