Long Beach Wilson Stopped by Stingy Huntington Beach
Led by its stingy defense, Huntington Beach High School upset undefeated Long Beach Wilson, 9-7, Friday at Sheue Field.
After giving up a quick first-quarter touchdown, Huntington Beach (2-2) allowed Wilson (2-1) across midfield only once.
“We were getting ripped by sitting back in our zone defense,” Huntington Beach Coach George Pascoe said. “We switched to man-to-man and put more pressure on their quarterback.”
Wilson quarterback Sean Hochmuth completed six of his first eight passes, including a nine-yard touchdown pass to Jeff San Jose. But Hochmuth was 6 for 14 after Huntington Beach changed its defense.
Huntington Beach tied the score with 7:16 left in the second quarter on a 16-yard run by Skip Murray. The Oilers took the lead five minutes later when Wilson punter Brett Barnes couldn’t handle a high snap and was tackled in the end zone.
