FOOTBALL : Josh Davis, the Peripatetic Quarterback, Out for Season

Share

The strange odyssey of Josh Davis has taken another turn.

The former Pierce College quarterback, who attended seven high schools, left the Valley College football team after being injured in the Monarchs’ 44-30 loss to College of the Desert two weeks ago.

Davis said he injured his ankle and will be unable to return this season. He said he has four years of eligibility remaining in baseball and will concentrate on that sport in the future.

“He was injured and he can’t play,” Valley College football Coach Chuck Ferrero said. “It’s kind of a mutual deal--he’s unable to play and he is no longer with the team.”

Davis transferred from Valley to Pierce last season, took over as the starter at mid-season and led the Brahmas to their third straight Southern California Conference title. When Pierce dropped its program in June, Davis returned.

Freshman Barry Hanks, who threw for 232 yards and a touchdown against Desert, will start for the Monarchs Saturday night against Harbor.

Greg Louganis Award: In the third quarter of his team’s 33-9 loss to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo last week, Cal Lutheran’s Noel Chestnut fielded a kickoff, faked left and right, then broke through the SLO coverage.

Having cleared the defenders, Chestnut was gliding toward the end zone when he tripped over the kicking tee at the 35-yard line.

“The tee flew 10 yards,” said Cal Lutheran Coach Bob Shoup.

Unfortunately, Chestnut flew only six and belly-flopped at the 29.

Double or nothing: In its 49-20 loss to Southern Utah State last week, Cal State Northridge gave up 501 yards. In its previous three games--all victories--the Matadors had allowed a total of 498.

Still, Northridge has the Western Football Conference’s No. 1 defense--at least statistically. The Matadors have given up an average of 250 yards and 18.3 points a game.

On the tube: Saturday’s CSUN-Cal Lutheran game will be televised by KTIE, Channel 6 in the Storer Cable franchise area. KSCN, 88.5 FM, will broadcast the game on radio.

Rankings: CSUN dropped from 12th to 19th in this week’s Division II football poll. Southern Utah moved from 19th to 15th. North Dakota State is No. 1.

Around the WFC: Southern Utah will match its veer against Portland State’s run-and-shoot passing attack Saturday and the result just might be a scoring avalanche that could challenge the conference record for most points in a game. A record 85 points were scored last year when Portland beat CSUN, 61-24. Players of the week: Dennis Wells of Southern Utah and Tom Gallo of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo were named WFC Players of the Week. Moorpark linebacker Tony Lucero had 15 tackles, four assists and a sack in the Raiders’ 10-7 win over Ventura. He was one of six state JC players of the week.
