FALL SPORTS HIGHLIGHTS : Chaminade Scrambles to Remain Undefeated

Chaminade High was one game away from losing its first volleyball match of the season on Thursday, but came back to win the final two games and defeat St. Genevieve, 14-16, 15-6, 10-15, 15-5, 15-5.

The victory improved Chaminade to 4-0 in the San Fernando Valley League and 7-0 overall.

Cathy Hayes paced Chaminade with 20 kills, while teammate Anna Suarez added 14 kills.

Calabasas def. Santa Clara 15-4, 15-12, 15-4--Carolyn Blake had 14 kills to pace Calabasas to the Frontier League win. Calabasas, ranked third in the Southern Section 3-A poll, improved to 2-1 in league and 6-2 overall. Santa Clara fell to 0-3 in league.

Heidi Thorsen contributed seven kills for Calabasas, while teammate Sandi Thomsen also had seven kills.

Simi Valley def. Westlake, 11-15, 15-10, 19-17, 15-11--After losing the first game, Simi Valley won three straight and posted an upset over Marmonte League rival Westlake, ranked No. 1 in the Southern Section 2-A poll. Westlake fell to 6-1 in league and 7-4 overall. Simi Valley improved to 5-2 in league.

Kennedy def. Sylmar, 15-0, 15-7--Kelly Delaney had three kills and Elke Hohls had six service aces to lead Kennedy to the North Valley League victory. Kennedy improved to 2-0 in league and 4-2 overall. Sylmar is 0-2 in league.

Birmingham def. Canoga Park, 6-15, 15-10, 15-8--Birmingham evened its West Valley League record at 1-1 with the victory. Cheryl Howard had five kills and Helena Lin added four kills to lead the way. Birmingham improved to 2-4 overall. Canoga Park tumbled to 0-2 in league and 3-3 overall.

Burroughs def. Schurr, 15-6, 15-0, 15-9--Burroughs kept its perfect Foothill League record intact at 4-0. Traci Tilton had nine kills to lead the way. Teammate Debbie Penney had eight kills and five blocks for Burroughs, ranked ninth in the Southern Section 3-A poll, as it improved to 9-2 overall.

Taft def. Reseda, 9-15, 15-5, 15-9--Robin Melnyk had 11 kills and 5 aces to lead Taft. Teammate Alana Regan had five kills.

Agoura def. Santa Paula, 15-1, 15-8, 15-3--Wendy Bennett served for 15 points and had five aces as Agoura moved to 3-1 in the Frontier League and 7-3 overall. Shannon Mathews had four kills and Jolene Clemens added five blocks for Agoura.

L.A. Baptist def. L.A. Lutheran, 15-8, 15-7, 15-6--Laurie Evans and Michelle Christiansen each had 14 kills to lead L.A. Baptist (6-2 in the Alpha League, 7-3 overall).

Newbury Park def. Camarillo, 15-8, 15-7, 16-14--The Panthers won their fourth straight Marmonte League match behind the hitting of Karen Austin and the serving of Tracy Krenkler. Newbury Park improved to 7-4 overall and 4-3 in league. Camarillo fell to 2-5 in league.

Louisville def. Alemany, 15-4, 15-6, 15-2--Tina Kohler had 15 kills and Ann Fletcher added nine kills to pace Louisville to the San Fernando Valley League win. Louisville improved to 4-0 in league and 4-3 overall.

Montclair Prep def. Marshall Fundamental, 16-14, 15-10, 7-15, 15-8--Montclair Prep’s Kari Knighton continued her streak of 168 straight serves without a miss as her team posted an Alpha League victory.

Thousand Oaks def. Royal, 15-11, 17-15, 15-6--Thousand Oaks improved to 4-3 in the Marmonte League and 7-4 overall with the win.

WATER POLO

Harvard 11, Santa Ynez 9--Fred Brende scored four goals and teammate Ivan El-Sayed added three goals to lead Harvard (4-0 in league, 11-5 overall) to the Frontier League victory.

GIRLS TENNIS

Taft def. Roosevelt, 7-0--Allison Fortner and Jenny Broidy both won singles matches to pace Taft to the nonleague victory.
