Long Beach Millikan High School, the defending Moore League champion, finally got what it was looking for Friday night. For the first time, the Rams beat Marina, 24-10, in a nonleague game at Millikan.

The schools have been playing since 1981, with the Vikings winning the first five games.

The Rams (4-0) scored three touchdowns and kicked a field goal in the second quarter as they controlled the line of scrimmage.

Raoul Spears scored from three yards early in the second quarter to erase a 3-0 Marina lead and give the Rams the lead for good.

Next came quarterback Jason Von Arx, who scored on an option play when he kept the ball and scored from the 30.

Millikan’s big defensive play of the quarter came when safety Tim Mulligan stepped in front of Marina receiver Ben LeFrancois, intercepted the pass and returned it 38 yards to score. Spears ran for a two-point conversion to give the Rams a 21-3 lead.

The Vikings’ first score came on LeFrancois’ 29-yard field goal at 8:03 of the first quarter. That gave the Vikings a 3-0 lead.

Viking running back John Simms got Marina’s other score on a 55-yard touchdown run off a sweep later in the second quarter.

Bob Crane’s 40-yard field goal late in the half gave Millikan a 24-10 lead.

The defenses took over in the second half, preventing any scoring.

Millikan Coach David Radford said: “We knew we hadn’t beaten them before, and our team is just thrilled with the victory.”

Spears had a big night for Millikan. He rushed for 121 yards on 17 carries as the Millikan offense had 369 total yards to Marina’s 190.
