Albert Fann, playing until he could play no more, led Cleveland High School of Reseda to a 20-7 victory over Crenshaw Friday at Crenshaw.

Fann, a senior tailback, rushed 23 times for 191 yards and one touchdown before dropping flat on his back, gasping for breath on the sidelines with 1:45 left in the game.

Fann began hyperventilating on the second play of a that started on the Cleveland 27 with 6:38 left and the Cavaliers leading, 20-7. He tried telling the players shuttling plays in from the sidelines he had to come out, but apparently they did not understand what he was saying.

So he played on. Only after consecutive carries of 14 and 1 yards that moved Cleveland into Crenshaw territory did he surrender to the fatigue.

“They kept giving the ball to me,” said Fann. “I was just exhausted. I couldn’t breathe.”

Fann broke an ankle two games into last season, when the Cavaliers finished 1-7. But now, with a healthy Fann, the Cavaliers are 4-0 heading into Valley League play next week.

Crenshaw, The Times’ fourth-ranked City Section team, is now 3-1.

Cleveland’s other quarterback, Mario Hull, teamed with split end Jay Rich, who later threw a touchdown pass, on a 69-yard touchdown pass play with 6:17 left in the first quarter.

Crenshaw tied the score, 7-7, when quarterback Jeffrey Sullivan passed to Michael Williams for 16 yards and a touchdown.

But Cleveland took a 14-7 halftime lead after an unnecessary roughness penalty and a little trickery led to a 40-yard touchdown pass play on a flea flicker.

The 15-yard roughness penalty moved the ball to the Crenshaw 40, from where the Cavaliers’ other quarterback, Jamie Grossman, flipped the ball to Rich, who threw to a wide open Mike Aranzullo.
