FALL SPORTS HIGHLIGHTS : Agoura Freshman Runner Sets Course Record

Led by Bryan Dameworth’s record-setting performance, Agoura High won the second of three Frontier League cross-country meets Tuesday at Soul County Regional Park in Ojai. Dameworth set a three-mile course record of 14:47. The previous best was 15:08.

The Agoura freshman was never seriously challenged after running the first mile in 4:48. Teammate Matthew Thomson finished second in 15:09.

Agoura, the No. 5-ranked team in the Southern Section’s 2-A Division, won the boys meet with 30 points. Nordhoff finished second with 38, followed by Calabasas (65) and Santa Paula (91). Santa Clara had no score.

Tammi Dobel’s winning 18:26 effort led Nordhoff to victory in the girls meet. Nordhoff had 26 points and was followed by Agoura (45), Calabasas (64) and Santa Clara (106). Santa Paula had no score.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Cal State Northridge def. Bakersfield, 15-8, 15-6, 15-8--Outside hitter Sue Darcey had 10 kills for CSUN, which is 20-4 overall, 4-0 in the California Collegiate Athletic Assn. CSUN’s Cami Crouch had three solo blocks and Karen Langston added four service aces.

Pierce College def. Glendale, 11-15, 15-8, 15-5, 15-10--Outside hitters Karen Suppan and Tricia Lynch each had 10 kills for Pierce (4-1 in the Western State Conference). Diane Baida added five service aces. Glendale is 2-2 in conference play.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Thousand Oaks def. Simi Valley, 13-15, 15-13, 15-5, 7-15, 15-10--Beth Welch recorded 19 kills as Thousand Oaks improved its Marmonte League record to 5-3. Teammate Julie Chellevold served 10 straight points in the final game. Middle blocker Kristen Cleary had six blocks and four kills.

Royal def. Channel Islands, 15-6, 15-4, 15-1--Lura Braden had seven kills and four digs in Royal’s Marmonte League victory. Sara Toring and Suzi Koonter added seven and six kills for Royal (4-4). Channel Islands is 0-8.

Westlake def. Camarillo, 15-3, 15-4, 9-15, 15-8--April Devine had 10 kills and Dana Simone had six kills and seven aces to lead Westlake (8-4, 7-1) in a Marmonte League match.

Notre Dame def. Alemany, 15-10, 15-7, 15-5--Laurie Jones had six kills and four blocks, and teammate Dana Marasca served for 14 points in Notre Dame’s San Fernando Valley League victory. Notre Dame improved to 8-4, 2-3 in league.

Hart def. Schurr, 15-2, 0-15, 15-11, 11-15, 16-14--Tiffany Leigh had 13 kills to lead Hart in the Foothill League victory. Teammates Angie Gorski and Kris Yates each added 10 kills for Hart (5-6, 2-3 in league).

L.A. Baptist def. Montclair Prep, 15-6, 15-10, 15-1--Laurie Evans had 9 of L.A. Baptist’s 11 kills. L.A. Baptist is 9-3, 7-2 in the Alpha League. Montclair Prep is 6-3 in league. L.A. Baptist’s Michelle Christiansen, a sophomore middle blocker, will miss the remainder of the season because of back surgery.

Village Christian def. La Verne Lutheran, 15-3, 15-4, 15-0--Karin Yoho had 11 kills to lead Village Christian (13-2, 8-1) in the Alpha League match.

Grace Community def. Highland Hall, 15-0, 15-10, 10-15, 13-15, 15-6--Highland Hall, which is winless in three Westside League matches, fell to 5-5 overall.

Kennedy def. Verdugo Hills, 15-4, 6-15, 15-0--Elke Hohls had six kills and Michele Barbera had six ace serves for Kennedy (5-2, 3-0 in the North Valley League).

Burroughs def. Burbank 15-6, 15-4, 15-4--Debbie Penney had 10 kills to lead Burroughs (5-0) to a Foothill League victory at Burbank. Teammate Mary Ann Wagner added six kills for Burroughs. Burbank is 3-2 in league.

Cleveland def. Sylmar, 15-12, 15-5--Sharon Kim had 10 aces and Nancy Nicholls had three kills for Cleveland, which is now 2-1 in North Valley League play.

Taft def. Birmingham, 15-12, 16-18, 15-11--Taft (3-0 in North Valley League) was led by Robin Melmyk with 12 kills and 14 digs. Teammates Sandra Salas had six kills and two solo blocks, and Alana Regan six kills and 10 digs.

WATER POLO

Crespi 12, Servite 11--Senior David Scott scored five goals, including a penalty shot in the last minute, to lead Crespi (9-5, 4-1 in the Del Rey League). Teammate Chappie DeHaven added three goals. Servite is 3-1 in league.

South Pasadena 22, Burroughs 8--Seniors Scott Weerts and Mike Daniels each scored three goals for Burroughs (2-1 in the Foothill League). Teammate Darrin Hill added two goals.

GIRLS TENNIS

Cleveland 4, Taft 3--Helen Tue, Chris Elvine and Ji Bak won singles matches for Cleveland in a West Valley League opener. It was Cleveland’s first-ever win over Taft.
