A baseball team of 11-year-olds from the People’s Republic of China completed a three-game tour of the United States by defeating an all-star team with players mostly from the Westside.

The Chinese, winners in New York City and Washington, D.C., beat Los Angeles, 9-5, at Dodger Stadium at the end of the tour sponsored by AT & T.

Daniel Ripoll of West Los Angeles hit a two-run double for the local squad, and Warner Wright of Beverly Hills and Damien Reynolds of Culver City each scored twice.

Other local players were Richard Condon of Culver City, Paul Holt and Paul Casillas of Santa Monica, Justin Schulman and Bradley Slater of West Los Angeles and Stanley Son of Mar Vista.

Also, Jason Schulenburg, Jason Elhers and Michael Rappaport of West Los Angeles, Curtis Kim of Culver City and Matthew Humiston of Beverly Hills.

Coaches were Billy Kunody of Beverly Hills and Whitey Lewis of Santa Monica.

Two new assistant track coaches, Nick Colon and Don Babbitt, have been appointed at Santa Monica College.

Colon, 30, who coached at Morningside High School and Compton and Los Angeles Southwest colleges, was an NCAA finalist while competing for Utah State and graduated from Cal State Dominguez Hills. At SMC he will coach sprinting and relay events.

Babbitt, 23, a UCLA senior and javelin thrower who has also coached the shot and discus at Santa Monica High School, will coach weight events for both the Corsair men’s and women’s teams.

Mark Walch, Joe Elliott, Ruth Reux and Jerry LeBlanc, all of the Mori Fencing Academy of Beverly Hills, finished first through fourth, respectively, in senior mixed foil in a recent Southern California Fencing Division meet at Los Angeles Valley College. Reux also took first place in women’s foil.

Three fencers from Culver City’s Salle Gascon also did well. In the under-20 junior mixed foil, Geoff Russell was first and Al Carter was third. Henry Moon was third in the under-16 junior mixed foil.

Jim Quinn won the open flight with a drive of 273 yards in the Penmar Men’s Golf Club’s third annual long drive championship. Evans Butler drove 270 yards to win the seniors’ flight.
