Bell-Jeff 14, St. Genevieve 7--Bell-Jeff scored two touchdowns in the second quarter and then was held scoreless in the second half by a tenacious St. Genevieve defense in the Santa Fe League game at Birmingham High.

“You’ve got to give them credit,” said Bell-Jeff Coach Doug Woodleif, whose team improved to 7-0, 3-0 in league. “They just came after us in the second half and shut us down.”

Keith Fitzgerald of Bell-Jeff completed 8 of 17 passes for 154 yards, including a 35-yard touchdown pass to Billy Brockway that put the game out of reach. Brockway had five receptions for 87 yards.

Dion Contreras of St. Genevieve (3-4, 1-3) completed 12 of 24 passes for 106 yards, but threw an interception with 52 seconds left in the game to end the Valiants’ comeback hopes. It was St. Genevieve’s third turnover.

St. Genevieve’s only touchdown came on a 15-yard run by Michael Alvarez with 11 minutes left in the game.

Tony Silva of Bell-Jeff was the game’s leading rusher with 56 yards on 10 carries.
