Tonopah, Nev., 30, Chaminade 14--The Eagles found out why Tonopah will be playing for the Southern Nevada Class AA state football championship in early November.

Behind the arm of quarterback Chriss Puckett and the running of John Klapper, the Muckers eased to a nonleague win at the Silver Bowl in Las Vegas.

Puckett fired touchdown passes of 11, 35 and 51 yards. Klapper added 100 yards on 20 carries. Klapper also had a one-yard scoring run that helped Tonopah hold off a brief Chaminade rally.

The Eagles tied Tonopah, 7-7, late in the first quarter when Sean Burwell scored from four yards out to end a five-play, 58-yard drive.

Chaminade quarterback Dave Morrison set up the scoring play with a 27-yard completion to wide receiver Steve Orr. Morrison completed 10 of 27 attempts for 145 yards and had three interceptions.

Tonopah (6-1) moved out to a 17-7 halftime lead on a 29-yard field goal by Craig Barr.

The Muckers stretched it to 24-7 on Puckett’s 11-yard scoring strike to Tommy Kramer. The one-play drive was set up when a fumble by Morrison was recovered by Tonopah’s Bob Ripley.

Chaminade (2-4-1) came back to make it 24-14 with 10 minutes left in the fourth quarter. John Hreno scored on an 11-yard run that ended a five-play, 80-yard drive. Morrison hit completions of 20 and 38 yards to set up the scoring play.

There were eight turnovers and 17 penalties in the game.
