Prep Tennis : Woodbridge’s Willett Wins 3rd Title
Julie Willett of Woodbridge High School won her third league title with a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Laguna Beach’s Mindy Leach Wednesday in the Pacific Coast League singles final at Laguna Beach.
Willett’s previous two championships came when Woodbridge was a member of the Sea View League. Woodbridge’s Taunya Van Hee and Kara Spivey beat Laguna Beach’s Kim Stephens and Wendy Sugi, 5-7, 6-4, 7-6, in the doubles final.
In other league finals:
Sea View--Second-seeded Margo Mullally of Newport Harbor defeated fourth-seeded Kristi Phebus of Corona del Mar, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, at the Newport Beach Tennis Club. Natalie Hastings and Erin Hendricks of Estancia beat Leslie Ryan and Vanessa Bunnell of Newport Harbor, 6-1, 6-4, in doubles.
Sunset--Jenny Weaver of Fountain Valley beat Naomi Iseri of Westminster, 6-3, 6-3, at the Fountain Valley Racquet Club. In doubles, Edison’s Debbie Goldberger and Tanya Johnson defeated Stephanie Urricariet and Kelli Thompson of Fountain Valley, 6-1, 6-0.
