Mark Paredes, coach of La Puente Bishop Amat High School, stood in the middle of the field after his team’s game against Santa Fe Springs St. Paul and explained his reasoning behind running a one-dimensional offense.

“When we throw a pass, something weird always happens,” Paredes said. “Yes, we have an option to throw the ball or give it to Eric Bieniemy. In a championship game like this, guess what I’m going to do?”

Give the ball to Bieniemy.

The 5-8 senior carried 22 times for 285 yards and scored four touchdowns as Bishop Amat beat St. Paul, 34-6, before 9,000 fans Friday night at Bishop Amat.

Bieniemy scored on runs of 43, 69, 41 and 37 yards as Bishop Amat (10-0, 5-0), the Times’ top-ranked team in the Southern Section, won its second consecutive Angelus League championship. This is the second year in a row that Bishop Amat has finished the regular season undefeated.

“I don’t think of myself as a game-breaker when I’m on the field,” said Bieniemy, who finished the regular season with 1,735 yards and 28 touchdowns. “I just try to get my four yards.”

Bieniemy scored his first touchdown with 5:12 left in the first quarter when he took a pitchout and broke off right tackle for 43 yards.

St. Paul ( 6-4, 4-1) answered with it’s only score of the game on the ensuing possession when quarterback Jeff Willis hit Jayson Pantages with a 9-yard scoring pass. Willis completed 12 of 24 passes for 168 yards.

Bieniemy broke the game open on the first play of Bishop Amat’s next possession with a 69-yard dash, again off right tackle.

Bieniemy’s final touchdowns came in the third quarter after Mark Granados returned the second-half kickoff 88 yards for a touchdown.
