San Diego — El Camino may have won only four games during the regular season, but the Wildcats seem to know how to win when it counts. El Camino won the 2-A championship in 1984 and reached the 2-A semifinals last year.
With their win over the Dons at USD, the Wildcats (5-6-0) have a 2-A quarterfinal date next Saturday with top-seeded Lincoln. USDHS finished 9-2-0.
Running back Joe Emerick keyed El Camino’s win over USDHS Friday night. Early in the first quarter, Emerick returned apunt 81 yards for a touchdown that gave El Camino a 6-0 lead.
The Wildcats, thanks to a strong defensive performance and some big plays on offense, improved their lead to 18-3 by halftime.
Then, after a scoreless third quarter, El Camino put the game away on a 36-yard touchdown run by Emerick two minutes into the final quarter.
The El Camino-Lincoln game next week will be rematch of last year’s 2-A semifinal, won by Lincoln, 8-7.
