KINNEY WESTERN REGIONAL Cross Country CHAMPIONSHIPS - FRESNO : ARROYO HIGH SCHOOL IN EL MONTE IS CONSIDERED THE VALLEY’S BEST HOPE TO TURN IN THE TOP PERFORMANCE AS A TEAM

Although Aaron Mascorro is considered the favorite male entry from the San Gabriel Valley, Tracey Williams the female favorite and Arroyo High’s varsity the top male team, a lot of Valley talent is expected, including: Suzette Basore and Craig Flanders (Pasadena High); Edgar Montes and Don LeFeure (Nogales); Fil Arizmendi (Azusa); Theresa Shotwell, Joanne Olson and John Deamos (Temple City); David Amarizca (La Puente); Diana Perez, Daniel Trigueros, Brandy Baker, Jennifer Durning, Albert Paredes and Christina Caton (Arroyo); Kevin Mills and Sandra Nyland (South Hills); Habib Kaify, John Sykes, Robert Brooks and Robert Callahan (Alhambra); Elijah Carder, Michael Short, Alex VillaGomez, Erik Polk, Patrick Lee, Kyle Szirargi, Andrew Oh, Chris Wu, Paul Florendo, Wendy Dunkel, Rob Johnson, Scott Jung, Don Scott and Chris Blanco (South Pasadena); Michelle Herrera and Brandon Dederich (Diamond Bar); Miguel Trujillo, Carlos Carrillo, Juan Salgado, David Lopez, Gerardo Perez, Alma Trujillo and Jaime Heredia (Rosemead); Chenoa Beesley, Patrick Thomas, LaVesta Flucker, Dawn FiField, Jill Ann Cross (Monrovia); Natalie Olmos, Letha Olmos, Matt Hemple, Scott Hempel, Ryan Polite, Coby Polite, Denise Bonville, Kazuki Kageyama, Sandra Acosta, Sheldon Watson, Lisa Vanderburg, Eric Christopherson and Darren Walker (Walnut). All male and female high school students who have been competing during the current season are eligible for the Western Regional, which includes California, Alaska, Arizona, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington, Wyoming and U.S. overseas military installations. Starting time Saturday, Dec. 6, is 10 a.m. at Fresno’s Woodward Park. There is no minimum qualifying time for the 5,000-meter course, which features rolling hills with one steep climb, 80% of it dirt, 10% grass and 10% road. The top eight male and top eight female runners will be sent to the Eighth Annual Kinney Cross Country Championships in San Diego on Dec. 13 to compete against finalists from three other regions. The program, said to be the only national competition for any prep sport, is sponsored by Kinney Shoe Corp. and sanctioned by The Athletics Congress.
