Reyes Sisters Lead Hueneme to Upset Win Over Mira Costa in State Volleyball Final
Oxnard Hueneme High School proved that size isn’t everything in girls’ volleyball, stunning previously unbeaten Manhattan Beach Mira Costa in five games to win the State Division I championship Saturday night at Cal State Fullerton.
Led by a pair of 5-6 sisters, Nora and Maria Reyes, the Vikings beat the nation’s No. 1-ranked team, 7-15, 15-10, 4-15, 15-9, 15-6.
“There’s no feeling like this in the whole world, just a fantastic feeling,” Maria Reyes said. Reyes, the tournament MVP, had 17 kills to help end Mira Costa’s 50-match winning streak.
Nora Reyes was equally impressive, turning in 15 kills and 23 digs as the Vikings won the State title in their first-ever trip to the championship final. It was the fourth State title appearance in the last five years for Mira Costa, which won in 1982 and 1985.
Hueneme, which lost to Mira Costa in four games in the Southern Section 5-A final, finishes the season 20-1. Mira Costa finishes 21-1.
Meanwhile, in a rematch of last year’s Division II final, Ojai Nordhoff beat South San Francisco, 15-7, 15-9, 15-4, In the Division III final, San Diego Francis Parker beat San Jose Valley Christian, 15-7, 15-4, 15-3.
