San Diego High School’s Marc Davis Wins Regional Cross-Country Title at Fresno

FRESNO — Marc Davis of San Diego High School led the pack through a fast first mile in 4:26 and was never challenged Saturday as he broke the course record while winning the Kinney Western Regional cross-country championship.
Davis’ time of 14 minutes 38.2 seconds broke the record set by Eric Reynolds of Camarillo in 1982 by eight-tenths of a second.
Katy McCandless of Castilleja High School in Palo Alto won a close girls’ race over the rolling, 5,000-meter course in 17:21.9.
The top eight finishers in the races at Woodward Park qualified for the national meet next Saturday at San Diego.
Mason Myers of Vacaville was second in the boys’ race in 15:00, followed by Aaron Mascorro of Rosemead, Robert Lopes of La Mesa, Paul Thomas of Rancho Cordova, Christopher Schurz of Scottsdale, Ariz., Dave Scudamore of Palos Verdes and Bryan Dameworth of Calabasas.
McCandless won the girls’ race by a stride over Melissa Sutton of Newbury Park, with Brigid Freyne another stride back. Also qualifying for the nationals were Kira Jorgensen of Vista, Tracey Williams of El Monte, Nicole Houle of Hesperia, Mary Mendoza of San Jose and Jamie Fallon of Klamath Falls, Ore.
