Edison High School scored the first major upset of the girls basketball season by downing top-ranked Brea-Olinda, 61-57, Saturday night in the title game of the seventh Irvine basketball tournament in Woodbridge High’s gymnasium.

Guard Michelle Hennessy made two free throws with four seconds remaining to clinch the victory for the Chargers.

“I thought we could beat them,” said Edison Coach Dave White. “We showed a lot of character tonight, and we showed a lot of confidence in beating Brea-Olinda.”

The lead see-sawed and was ultimately won at the free-throw line as Edison made eight in the last two minutes.

Denise Ogburn was the leading scorer for the Chargers with 18 points, but it was the scrappy play of Kristi Smith that helped the Chargers upset Orange County’s No. 1-ranked team. Smith, who scored 12 points and grabbed eight rebounds, was named the most valuable player of the tournament.

Edison (4-0) had a 31-23 lead at halftime only to see the Wildcats come back to tie the game, 43-43, at the end of the third quarter. Susan Toussey and Carrie Egan led the third quarter rally and both finished with 14 points.

Brea (3-1) went ahead early in the fourth quarter, 53-49, but saw the complexion of the game change when the Wildcats failed to take advantage of a technical foul called against Charger Coach Dave White and missed four consecutive free throws.
