Orange County Girls’ Basketball Roundup : Westminster Defeats Villa Park

Shannon Bates scored eight of her game-high 16 points in the fourth quarter Tuesday night to help the Westminster High School girls’ basketball team defeat Villa Park, 44-40, in a nonleague game played in the Spartans’ gym at Villa Park.

The Spartans (1-3) had trailed by 10 points at halftime but outscored the Lions, 18-6, in the third period to take a 28-24 lead. Suzie Barnett scored 16 points for Villa Park, but Westminster (3-2) came back in the fourth quarter behind the play of Bates.

In other nonleague action:

Edison 86, Los Altos 47--Kristi Smith had 23 points and Claudia Morris added 17 to lead the Chargers at Edison High School.

Laguna Hills 44, Pacifica 32--Wendy Hensel, a senior forward, scored 15 points and 19 rebounds in the Hawks’ (1-2) victory at Pacifica High School. Iris Veneracion scored 12 points for Laguna Hills.

Santa Ana 42, Saddleback 25--Lolly Figueroa had 11 points to lead the Saints (2-2). Santa Ana outscored Saddleback (0-3), 18-2, in the third quarter to break the game open.

Bolsa Grande 32, Dana Hills 30--Caroline Matney made a 15-feet shot with one second left to lift the Matadors. Matney, a senior guard, led Bolsa Grande with 13 points at Bolsa Grande High School.

La Quinta 61, Ocean View 45--Donna Gondringer, a 6-foot 1-inch center, scored 34 points for a school record and had 7 rebounds to lead the Aztecs at Ocean View High School. Dalene Lawson led Ocean View with 23.

Garden Grove 44, Buena Park 41--After trailing 18-27 at halftime, the Argonauts rallied to win. Allison Jenkins led Garden Grove with 10 points.

Liberty Christian 52, Claremont 12--The Minutemen (1-1) led 30-4 at halftime and maintained their momentum at Liberty Christian High School.

In Rancho Grande Tournament action

Tustin 62, John W. North 56--Tricia Andres scored 21 points, and Melissa Hammond added 17 points and 14 rebounds in the Tillers’ second-round victory at Etiwanda High School. Michele Williams scored 20 points for the Huskies. Tustin plays Walnut at 8 tonight at Alta Loma High.

Santa Ana Valley 50, Santiago 45--After trailing 22-24 at halftime, the Falcons scored 16 points in the third quarter to rally for the victory. Sharron Murrell led Santa Ana Valley (2-0) with 17 points and 6 rebounds at Santiago High School.

Trabuco Hills 62, Rancho Alamitos 28--After a 22-2 first quarter lead, Trabuco Hills showed little sign of slowing down at Rancho Alamitos High School.

In the Brea Tournament

Valencia 60, Orange 33--The Tigers utilized a strong defense to keep Orange in control in first round action.

Foothill 46, University 21--After leading 26-9 at halftime, the Knights kept their momentum going until the fourth quarter when the Trojans’ defense held them scoreless.

La Habra 57, Alta Loma 37--The Highlanders took control of the game early in the first half, easing through their first-round game.

Katella 70, Ganesha 19--Joanie Easterly scored 16 points and had 15 rebounds in three quarters for the Knights (4-0).
