ORANGE COUNTY PREP BASKETBALL : Boys’ Roundup : Lucas Leads Katella to 74-66 Win Over Capistrano Valley

Senior center Richard Lucas scored 22 points and Tom Villaneuva added 17 to lead Katella High School past Capistrano Valley, 74-66, Thursday night in a quarterfinal game of the Sunny Hills-Sonora Tournament at Sonora.

Katella, which won the Laguna Beach Tournament last weekend, plays Sonora in a semifinal game tonight at 7:30.

Scott McCullough scored a game-high 30 for the Cougars. Todd Marinovich added 11 and Todd Cosoff had 10.

In other Sunny Hills-Sonora Tournament games:

Sunny Hills 53, La Habra 38--The Lancers took a 14-2 lead to start the game and never trailed in their easy quarterfinal victory at Sunny Hills.

Forward Eric Carpenter scored 12 points to lead Sunny Hills (4-0), and guard David Chisum added 11.

Sunny Hills prevented the Highlanders from scoring in double figures in all but the second quarter. The Lancers will play Woodbridge tonight in a semifinal game at 8.

Woodbridge 59, Irvine 55--The Warriors (2-0) outscored the Vaqueros, 18-8, in the third quarter and went on to win the quarterfinal game at Sunny Hills.

Junior center Adam Keith scored 28 points to lead Woodbridge, and Vince Bryan added 15. Irvine guard Mike Herring led all scorers with 32.

Capistrano Valley “B” 58, Canyon 49--The Cougar “B” team made 17 free throws in the fourth quarter of the consolation quarterfinal game. Canyon guard David Jones led all scorers with 18 points. Forward Marco Forster led the Cougars with 14.

Brea-Olinda 65, Newport Harbor 52--Only four players scored for the Wildcats (1-2) but three scored in double figures as new Brea-Olinda Coach Rick Jones won his first varsity game.

Ron Thomas scored 25 points and Bob Terry had 20 for the Brea. Gary Chiotti scored 11 points and Mike Thorum added 9 for the Wildcats.

Senior Jon Alstrom scored 19 and Jim Geerlings 13 for the Sailors.

Magnolia 62, Hacienda Heights Wilson 50--Senior Mark Lyon scored 25 points and senior Mike Goff added 15 as the Sentinels defeated the Wildcats in a consolation game.

Damen Owens scored 13 for Wilson.

Savanna 56, Sunny Hills JV 42--Mike Campbell scored 16 points and Jay Turner 14 to lead the Rebels (1-3) past the Lancer JV (1-2).

Robby Booker was only other Rebel in double figures with 10 points.

Alan Davis scored 16 for the Sunny Hills JV.

In the Fountain Valley Tournament:

Marina 58, Servite 47--Steve Guild scored 21 points and Mark Georgeson added 19 as the Vikings (3-0) advanced to the final against St. Anthony tonight at 7:30.

St. Anthony 73, Fountain Valley 70--Darrick Martin scored 21 points to lead the Saints, who never trailed, in a semifinal game.

Derek Hall added 12 and Derrick Walker had 11 for St. Anthony. Fountain Valley’s Tom Rochlen led all scorers with 23 points and teammate Rob Briggs added 20. The Barons are 2-2.

Compton 73, El Dorado 63--The Golden Hawks were outscored, 27-7, in the first quarter and never recovered. The loss eliminates El Dorado (2-3) from the tournament.

Derrick Crane scored a game-high 19 for Compton and Derry Thompson added 16.

Charles Stevens scored 14 points and Chris Facione 19 for El Dorado.

In the San Maria Tournament:

Cabrillo 49, Dana Hills 48--Senior David Cmelak scored what appeared to be the wining basket as time ran out but was called for charging as the Dolphins (1-4) lost. Cmelak finished with 11 points and teammate Donny McIntyre and Tim McSweeny scored 10 each.

Kennedy 73, Santa Maria 53--Jeff Howell was 9 of 11 from the field and 3 of 3 from the line to score 21 points and lead the Irish (3-2).

Edison 69, St. Joseph 65--Mike Henderson scored 25 points to lead the Chargers (1-2).

In the Santa Ana Tournament:

Mission Viejo 59, Saddleback 42--Senior Jeff Herdman scored 17 points to lead the Diablos (3-0) into the championship game tonight at 8:15 against Trabuco Hills.

Gylan Dotton scored a game-high 18 points for the Roadrunners (2-1).

Trabuco Hills 69, Buena Park 60--Gordon McNeill scored a career-high 31 points to lead the surprising Mustangs (6-0), who are in their first season of varsity competition, into the final. John Welch added 16 for the Trabuco Hills.

Kevin Grady scored 21 for Buena Park, which plays Saddleback for third place tonight at 6:15 p.m.

In the San Clemente Tournament:

El Toro 66, Lincoln Prep 56--Eric Speaker led the Chargers with 25 points and Khari Johnson added 14. El Toro plays Foothill next.

In the La Quinta Tournament:

La Quinta 66, El Modena 59--Scott Campbell scored 14 points and Mike Whitcomb had 20 points and 9 rebounds to lead the Aztecs into the championship tonight at 8 against Tustin. Brian Joe had eight rebounds for the Aztecs, Kenny Bennett had five assists and Chris Jackson had six steals.

El Modena plays Huntington Beach at 6:30 tonight in the third-place game. The consolation championship game is between Pacific and Torrance at 5.

Notre Dame 58, Newport Christian 47--Wayne Everett had 12 points for the Conquerors and George Wood scored 12. Jim Vaughan scored 17 for Notre Dame, and Manny DeCastro scored 16. The Conquerors play Southern California Christian at 5 p.m. today and Notre Dame faces El Camino at 8 p.m.
