San Diego Roundup : County Powers to Play L.A. Teams

Some of the state’s best high school basketball teams will meet in San Diego County this weekend and next week.

Starting today, two traditional powers from Los Angeles County, L.A. Banning and Pasadena Muir, travel to play two of San Diego’s finest teams, Sweetwater and Morse.

The games at Sweetwater High School in National City begin at 6 p.m. with Morse playing Banning, followed at 8 by Sweetwater and Muir. Saturday the teams travel to Morse High School in East San Diego where Sweetwater will play Banning at 6 p.m. and Morse will play Muir at 8.

Beginning Monday, the 40th annual Kiwanis Basketball Tournament will get under way at seven sites throughout the area.

The tournament continues with elimination games Tuesday and again on Dec. 26. The finals will be played at Serra and Hoover High Schools on Dec. 27.

The favorites in the boys’ divisions are Morse, Mount Miguel, Madison and Poway in the Unlimited Division; Castle Park, Chula Vista, Hoover and La Jolla in the Limited Division, and Lincoln, St. Augustine, Mission Bay and Clairemont in the Classified Division.

In the girls’ divisions, the favorites are Point Loma, Santana, Lincoln and Helix in the Unlimited Division and San Pasqual, Orange Glen, Monte Vista and Grossmont in the Limited Division.

Admission is $2 per day for adults, $1 for students. A pass good for all games is $4.

The Tournament of Champions at Balboa Park Monday will close the 1986 junior golf season. The 1987 season gets under way a week later with the Mike Vesock Junior Invitational.

Five winter and spring tournaments will follow the three-day Vesock tournament. Seven summer tournaments follow that, leading up to the Optimist Junior World tournament.

The San Diego County Junior Golf Assn. is open to boys and girls up to 16 years of age. Yearly dues are $5 ($6 for North County residents). Applications are available by calling 280-8505.
