Girls’ Basketball : Erkenbrack Leads Canyon Over Santa Ana Valley in Title Game

Karrie Erkenbrack scored 14 points to lead the Canyon High School girls’ basketball team to a 50-46 victory over Santa Ana Valley in the championship game of the Bolsa Grande Tournament Saturday night.

Erkenbrack, a sophomore center, was named the tournament’s most valuable player. The Comanches (4-3) trailed at the half, 30-22, but strong defensive play and eight points from Randi Pankratz in the third quarter boosted Canyon to the lead. Lisa Iino added 14 points for Canyon.

In the Garden Grove Tournament

Long Beach Poly 44, Costa Mesa 34--Meg Mitchell scored 10 points in a losing effort for the Mustangs (7-3) in the third-place game. Long Beach Poly led, 34-32, with three minutes to play, but the Jackrabbits outscored Costa Mesa, 10-2.

Magnolia 53, El Toro 49--Kattie Donica scored 26 points and Dawne Borum added 19 for the Sentinels in the fifth-place game.

Andrea Young and Lori Halliday scored 15 points each for the Chargers (6-3).

Brea-Olinda J.V. 56, Cypress 54--Amiee McDaniel scored eight points and had four steals in the final 10 minutes to help the Wildcats rally from a 44-41 fourth-quarter deficit for the consolation championship. McDaniel, a freshman guard, finished with 16 points for the Wildcats.

In the Granada Tournament:

Concord Carondelet 44, Ocean View 32--Amanda Green scored 17 points to lead Carondelet (10-1). Dalene Lawson scored 15 points for Ocean View (4-5).

In the Orange Luthern Invitational Tournament:

Orange Lutheran 55, L.A. Lutheran 38--Michelle Boltz led the Lancers (5-1) with 16 points in the championship game. Marcella Lopez led L.A. Lutheran with 17.

Head-Royce 52, Rosary 46--Karen White, named tournament MVP, had 18 points to lead the Jayhawks in the third-place game.

Rio Hondo 34, Connelly 26--Julene Ostergard led Rio Hondo with 12 points in the consolation final.
