San Diego Roundup : Holiday Classic Attracts 80 Top Women Gymnasts

Eighty of America’s best women gymnasts will compete in the Holiday Classic Gymnastics Invitational Saturday and Sunday in San Diego State’s Peterson Gym.

Competition begins Saturday at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. The finals will be Sunday at 4 p.m.

Local gymnasts Julianne Bauer, Michelle Colavin and Anne Dixon will compete.

Bauer, 14, is a ninth-grader at Bonita Vista Junior High School and the Junior Elite Region I Floor champion for 1986. Colavin, 17, is a senior at University High and was the bronze medalist at the Senior Elite Regionals. Dixon, 13, is an eighth-grader at Rancho Santa Fe Junior High and the Class I Junior State Beam champion.

Tickets, $4 for adults and $2 for students and children, will be available at the door. Adult tickets will be $5 on Sunday. A two-day discount pass will be available.

The 40th annual Kiwanis High School Basketball Tournament continues today and Saturday.

Games will be today at 3, 4:45, 6:30 and 8:15 p.m. at Patrick Henry, Serra and San Diego high schools for boys and Helix, Point Loma Santana and University City high schools for girls.

Saturday’s championship games will be at Serra and Hoover. At Serra, the boys’ limited division championship game will be at 4:30 p.m., the girls’ unlimited division at 6:15 and the boys’ unlimited division at 8. At Hoover, the girls’ limited division championship will be at 4:30 p.m. with the boys’ classified division at 6:15.

Tickets are available at the game sites for $1 for children and students and $2 for adults.
