BRIEFLY : Valley Athletes Are Off and Running

Angela Burnham of Rio Mesa High, the 1986 state track champion at 100 meters, will make her 1987 debut at the Sunkist Invitational at the Los Angeles Sports Arena on Jan. 16.

Burnham, 15, who last June became the first freshman girl ever to win the state 100-meter championship, heads a list of Valley-area athletes who have entered the meet.

Junior Desiree Joubert of Westlake, third in the 800 meters at the state championships, is entered in the 880-yard run. Sophomore Heather Scobie of Saugus and junior Kim Crongeyer of Kennedy will run the mile.

Mike Carnes of Simi Valley and LaMark Allen of Saugus have entered the long jump. Carnes finished sixth in the state championships and has a personal best of 23-4; Allen has jumped 23-.

The high jump will include Dave Swanson of Alemany and Matt Batham of Burbank. Swanson won the 1986 Del Rey League championship with a personal best of 7-feet. Batham has leaped 6-8.

West Hills Little League Holds Sign-Ups

The West Hills Little League will hold registration on Jan. 10 (9 a.m. to 4 p.m.) and the 15th (7 p.m. to 9 p.m.) at Shadow Ranch Park in Canoga Park, 22633 Vanowen. For more information: 818-992-9932.

In Northridge, Little League sign-ups will be held on the 10th (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.) and the 11th (noon to 4 p.m.) on the diamond complex located on Devonshire Street, between Reseda and Wilbur.

Boys and girls, aged six to 15, can sign up for T-ball, softball or baseball.

Ski For Free

Friday is “National Learn-to-Ski Day.” First-time skiers can receive a free lesson, rental equipment and the use of beginner slopes. Some Valley ski shops are offering free information kits on the program.

NOTABLE

Thurlow Rogers of Van Nuys had to settle for second in Wednesday’s inaugural Fiesta Bowl bicycle race when he was beaten in the final yards of the 16.8-mile event. Glenn Sanders, this year’s top U.S. amateur cyclist, won the race, run on a seven-tenths-of-a-mile course on the Fiesta Bowl Parade route.

The pair had a 200-yard lead on the rest of the 53-rider field for most of the race.

Each man completed 24 laps in the alloted time (approximately 45 minutes).

Jim Bonds, the Northwestern Conference Player of the Year, was joined on the 1986 team by teammates Chris Hite (wide receiver), Brian Jacobs (offensive lineman) and Jim Vander Toorn (defensive lineman). Bonds passed for 3,197 yards and 39 touchdowns, and led Hart to the Northwestern Conference championship.

Also selected to the team, sponsored by the First Interstate Bank and the Amateur Athletic Foundation, were offensive lineman Larry Hatley and quarterback Jeff Barrett of Burroughs, and kicker Abo Velasco of Burbank.

Running back Andy Bell led a contingent of three Harvard players on the Desert-Mountain Conference team. Also selected with Bell were kicker Dominic Sandifer and linebacker Peter Andersons. Other selections were defensive lineman Greg Spaulding and defensive back Marty Garron from Calabasas, Agoura wide receiver Mike Eckel and Bell Jeff defensive lineman Tom Ressler.

Selected to the Inland Conference team was defensive back Eric Treibatch of Montclair Prep.

Former Taft High wide receiver Monty Gilbreath, who last season was named to The Times All-Valley first team, caught five passes for 87 yards and a touchdown for San Diego State in the Aztecs’ 39-38 Holiday Bowl loss to Iowa on Wednesday.
