PINE BLUFF, Ark. — Mater Dei High School of Santa Ana missed two shots in the final 12 seconds and was beaten, 48-46, Saturday night by Flint Hill Prep of Oakton, Va., before 4,500 fans in the championship game of the King Cotton prep basketball tournament.
Flint Hill (10-0), ranked No. 1 in the nation by USA Today, seemed in control before a turnover with 34 seconds left gave Mater Dei (12-1), ranked ninth in the nation, a chance to pull even.
But Mater Dei’s John Boyle missed a six-foot bank shot with 12 seconds left, and a 10-footer by LeRon Ellis curled out with two seconds left. Ellis had 19 points despite being in foul trouble.
