Orange County Prep Basketball : Palos Verdes Edges Woodbridge for Tournament Title

Heidi Burge scored 18 points to lead the Palos Verdes High School girls’ basketball team to a 59-57 victory over Woodbridge in the final of the Costa Mesa Tournament Saturday at Costa Mesa High School.

Woodbridge (8-5) was led by center Gilly Powell with 17 points.

Palos Verdes never trailed, although Woodbridge tied the score midway through the fourth quarter until Burge and guard Suzie O’Grady combined for 10 points in the fourth to help Palos Verdes (11-4) pull away. O’Grady made two free throws with 12 seconds remaining to give Palos Verdes a four-point lead.

In other Costa Mesa Tournament games:

Capistrano Valley 52, Schurr 51--Shelly Zierhut scored 15 points as the Cougars won the third-place game. The Cougars (9-5) overcame a 10-point deficit in the second half. Schurr’s Kris Ballesteros scored 17 points.

Tustin 60, Cerritos 46--Tricia Andras scored 14 points and had 7 assists and Janice Gonzales added 12 points and 6 assists for the Tillers (10-4) in the consolation championship. Yvette Hernandez scored 14 points for Cerritos.

In the Cypress Tournament:

Riverside Poly 64, Westminster 44--Riverside Poly was led by Tisha Edinbyrd (20 points), Doris Williams (14) and Jami Wilson (10). Westminster (7-4) was led by Devon Akita with 15 points.

In the Orange Glen Tournament:

Laguna Beach 59, Villa Park 38--Felicia Chalmers had 26 points to lead the Artists to the consolation championship. Chalmers scored 57 points during the tournament. Liz Stal added 13 points and 11 rebounds for Laguna Beach (5-3).

In boys’ nonleague games:

El Toro 66, Norhoff 51--Eric Speaker and Cory Wayland each scored 18 for the Chargers (10-4) at Norhoff High School at Ojai. Bret Johnson added 17 for El Toro. Todd Cowgill scored 17 to lead Norhoff (10-5). Wayland had 16 rebounds.

Maranatha 62, Southern California Christian 61--Robert Gustafson scored 15 points in Maranatha’s victory at Southern California Christian. SCC’s Jason Park led all scorers with 22 points. Park, a sophomore center, also had 18 rebounds for SCC (2-4).
