ORANGE COUNTY PREP BASKETBALL : Boys’ Roundup : Briggs’ 25 Leads Fountain Valley

Rob Briggs made all three of his three-point attempts, scoring 25 points on 10-of-13 shooting to lead Fountain Valley High School to a 64-59 nonleague boys’ basketball victory over El Toro at Fountain Valley.

El Toro is ranked ninth in this week’s Orange County Sportswriters’ Assn. poll.

El Toro (10-5) trailed, 46-26, late in the third quarter, but made four three-point shots in less than two minutes, cutting the lead to eight. Fountain Valley (6-6) held off El Toro for the final margin.

In other games:

Brethren 52, Orange Lutheran 45--Chris Tatum scored 15 and D’Andre Brown had 13 as Brethren won an Olympic League game at Lutheran (4-6, 0-1). Geoff McArthur led Lutheran with 19.

Gethesemane Christian 79, Claremont 28--Gentry Patrick had 28 points and David Murphy had 25 for the Crusaders at Gethesemane Christian High School. Tom Patraw had 12 points for the Cougars.

St. Margaret’s 48, Newport Christian 47--Chris Cooper made two free throws with seven seconds remaining to give St. Margaret’s the win. Mark Flather had 19 points to lead St. Margaret’s. John Adachi had 18 points for the Conquerors (4-5).

St. Michael’s 47, Heritage 46--Steve Perius made an eight-foot shot with two seconds left, giving St. Michael’s its first league victory. St. Michael’s (1-2, 2-2) led by 12 points with 3:35 remaining, but Heritage (1-2, 3-3) used a zone press take a 46-45 lead with 18 seconds left. Sean Heagney led St. Michael’s with 17 points and nine rebounds. Alex Heil added 10.

Western 64, Santiago 59--Will Jefferson scored 17 and Chuck Powell added 16 as the Pioneers won a nonleague game.

Westminster 62, La Quinta 51--Chris Tower had 19 points and Mark Austin had 16 for the Lions at La Quinta. Brian Joe had 14 points for La Quinta (6-7).
