Valhalla 74, Helix 61--Valhalla (5-1, 9-4) jumped out to a 33-13 lead in the first half and cruised to an easy victory at Helix. Troy Toolson had 21 points and 7 assists to lead Valhalla, while teammate Rob Tubman added 16 points, 12 rebounds and 4 assists. Robbie Ledford led Helix with 10 points. It was Valhalla Coach Manny Silva’s 100th varsity basketball victory.

El Cajon 40, El Capitan 35--Both teams were even until the third period, when El Cajon outscored El Capitan, 10-6. El Capitan scored only twice from the field in the third period. P.J. Panebianco led El Cajon (3-3, 7-5) with 17 points. El Capitan’s Eric Lozoya led all scorers with 22 points. El Capitan is 2-4 and 6-6.

Monte Vista 76, Grossmont 66--Scott Winne scored 23 points to pace host Monte Vista (5-1, 8-3). Grossmont is 3-3 and 6-7.

NONLEAGUE

Mira Mesa 77, USDHS 73--Trailing 68-54 with six minutes left, USDHS closed to within four by repeatedly fouling Mira Mesa players, who made only 10 of 20 free throws in the game’s final minutes. Mike Eicher had 16 points to lead a balanced offense for Mira Mesa (12-2) in which all five starters scored in double figures. The bulk of the scoring for USDHS came from James Wilson with 27 points and Eric Sidlinger with 25.

La Jolla 64, Serra 31-- David Berteaux scored 16 of his 18 points in the first half as La Jolla won easily. Adam Kleid led all scorers with 20 points. La Jolla (10-4) led 16-1 midway through the first quarter and 31-11 at the half. Todd Knight led Serra (2-10) with 10 points.

Kearny 65, San Diego 42--Randy Robinson scored 23 points and John Williamson added 21 to lead Kearny to the victory at San Diego. Kearny’s zone defense forced San Diego to the perimeters, as the Komets took a 36-19 lead at the half. Kearny (11-3) has won 10 of its last 11 games.

Lincoln 64, Point Loma 57--With no starters back from last season, Lincoln Coach Ron Loneski has depended on sophomores and juniors this season. Sophomores Joe Temple and Aaron Wilhite paced Lincoln with 14 and 13 points, respectively. Lincoln’s full-court press kept Point Loma trailing throughout. Lincoln is 7-5.

Christian 58, University City 53--Christian took advantage of three UC turnovers late in the game for the victory at home. Gary Wines led Christian (10-3) with 16 points. Durrell Sims paced University City (4-5) with 21 points.

GIRLS

Santana 46, Mount Miguel 45--Mount Miguel rallied from a 16-5 first-period deficit, but could not sustain its drive late in the fourth period in a Grossmont League game at Santana. Six-foot junior center Leslie Ellis paced Santana (6-0, 9-4) with 19 points. Marla Swanson led Mount Miguel (4-3, 8-6) with 15.

NONLEAGUE

Point Loma 64, Lincoln 24--Terri Mann had 31 points and 25 rebounds to lead the Pointers to the easy victory at Linoln. Point Loma, which registered 19 steals, held Lincoln to two points in the second period to take a 39-12 lead at the half. Point Loma (18-0) is the No. 1 girls’ team in the state, according to CalHi Sports of Sacramento.
