Kroll’s House Call Leads Alemany Girls

Alemany High guard Jenny Beubis wasn’t in the lineup Thursday night when the Indians played Bell-Jeff.

Beubis, the team’s leading scorer, was at home--sick in bed along with her 16-point scoring average.

With Beubis out, senior forward Jennifer Kroll provided a booster shot to the Alemany offense by scoring a career-high 29 points as Alemany beat Bell-Jeff, 71-50, in a San Fernando Valley League game at Bell-Jeff.

“I knew going in that I had to help out a little more with the scoring,” said Kroll, who was averaging 12 points a game. “I was thinking offense a little more tonight. Usually, we really stress defense.”

Before the game, Bell-Jeff Coach Jim Couch emphasized the need for his team to pressure Alemany outside and control Kroll near the basket.

But Kroll was unstoppable from the outset, matching her season average with a 12-point first quarter. She made shots from the outside, off drives to the basket and off many of her game-high 16 rebounds to give Alemany a 19-14 lead that was never challenged.

Alemany (15-3, 2-0) also got a strong performance from junior guard Millie Junio, who scored 13 points and had eight assists. She also made two key shots that helped Alemany pull away in the second quarter.

Alemany was leading, 23-18, with six minutes left in the half when Junio capped a 10-2 run with a pair of 18-foot jump shots that put the game out of reach.

“Millie did a great job running the offense, taking shots and getting the ball to Kroll in the right situations,” Alemany Coach Melissa Melton said. “She was a key because as a team, we looked confused and a little bit lost at times.”

Kroll said the reason for Alemany’s lack of concentration may be its game next Thursday against defending league-champion Louisville.

“I think we’re a little bit anxious,” Kroll said. “We can’t look past our game next week with St. Genevieve, but we’ve been waiting to play Louisville all year.”

Bell-Jeff (5-8, 0-2) had three players score at least 10 points. Point guard Hanh Tran led the Lady Guards with 13 points. Sarah Dancs had 11 and Andja Vucurevic scored 10.

Andrea Hoffman had six points and eight rebounds for Alemany.

ALEMANY--Kroll 29, Shoenmann 8, Hoffman 6, Junio 13, Davis 4, Sasadeusz 4, Waco 2, Castaneda 5.

BELL-JEFF--Tran 13, Couch 8, Cutler 2, Dancs 11, Vucurevic 10, Escobar 2, Negrete 2, Rodney 2.
