San Pedro High School got downright defensive, and because of it, the Pirates won the City soccer title Friday night with a 1-0 victory over defending champion Belmont at Westchester High.

San Pedro was known more for its offense, led by the City’s leading scorer, Raul Haro, who came into the game with 36 goals. But it was the defense that denied Belmont and completed the Pirates’ perfect season at 18-0. Belmont finished 11-2-2.

The game’s only score came following a San Pedro corner kick with eight minutes left in the first half. Belmont prevented San Pedro from setting up an attempted head shot, but the ball ended up in front of the goal, where Luis Rodriguez drilled a shot--right into a Belmont defender.

But Rodriguez got another chance when the ball bounced back to him, and he didn’t miss the second time, shooting it into the right corner of the goal with his left foot. It was only his fourth goal of the season.
