The Cal State Northridge men’s golf team, paced by Tony Chieffo’s second-place finish, tied for fifth in a 20-team college invitational tournament that ended Wednesday at the Sandpiper Golf Club in Goleta.

Chieffo shot even par over 54 holes to finish three strokes behind co-medalists Terrence Miskell of USC and Kevin Sutherland of Fresno State.

Wayne Tyni of Northridge shot 221. The Matadors shot 903 as a team to finish 30 strokes behind tournament-winner Fresno State.

Pete Warda, a 6-3, 253-pound defensive lineman from Valley College, has accepted a scholarship from Tennessee Tech.

Warda, a transfer from Pierce College, is the ninth Valley starter to move on to a Division I school.

Barry Hanks, a freshman quarterback at Valley College, was the top-rated passer among California community colleges in 1986, according to statistics released by Fred Baer of the JC Athletic Bureau.

Hanks completed 92 of 160 passes for 11 touchdowns with two interceptions for a passing efficiency rating of 159.955, more than 14 points better than the No. 2 quarterback, Robb Huffman, an All-American at Glendale College.
