Fairfax High, the best team in the state, alternated its best three players--Sean Higgins (6-9), Chris Mills (6-7) and J. D. Green (6-7)--against Taft’s Kevin Franklin last Friday.

Although Taft lost, 74-63, Franklin (6-3 1/2) scored a season-high 41 points in, around and over the faces of the taller Lions. Franklin, who is shooting 62% this season, made 14 of 24 shots and 13 of 15 free throws.

“It felt good,” Franklin said, “especially coming against Sean, J.D. and Chris.”

Except for the caliber of the competition, it was a normal night for Franklin, who has scored more than 30 points in 12 games and in all eight Valley League games.

Franklin’s shooting was as impressive as was the way he boosted his teammates throughout Taft’s attempt to stay with Fairfax.

“I’m used to playing against that kind of competition and they’re not,” said Franklin of his teammates. “As captain, I try to be leader and help them keep their heads up.”
