ORANGE COUNTY PREP BASKETBALL : Roundup : Tustin Holds Off Estancia to Finish 2nd

Tustin High School held off Estancia, 55-50, Friday night to finish second in the Sea View League at Tustin.

For a while, it looked as if the Tillers (7-3, 19-5) playoff hopes would end.

With less than two minutes left, Tustin held a seven-point lead. Estancia, however, closed to three after guard Kyle Mooney made two free throws and scored a layup after a steal with 1:20 left.

Seconds later, Pat Norville stole the ball from Lesean London and scored to cut the lead to, 51-50.

Tustin forward Rog Middleton (23 points, 6 rebounds) then scored underneath with 53 seconds left and Lou Klein’s two free throws with 10 seconds left clinched the victory.

Mooney had 14 points for Estancia (5-5, 11-13).

In the Century League:

El Modena 83, Foothill 66--Senior forward Jeff Steingraber scored a game-high 27 points as the Vanguards (4-6, 5-14) upset the Knights at El Modena. John DeGree scored 18 points and 14 rebounds, and Adam Coghill and Jeff Parr scored 10 points each for El Modena. Coghill had eight assists.

Greg Rieber scored 17 for Foothill.

Santa Ana 79, Santa Ana Valley 56--The Saints (9-1, 20-6) took their second consecutive Century League championship as Bobby Joyce scored 18 points and had 19 rebounds and Leo Leon had 10 points and 8 assists. Santa Ana outscored the Falcons (4-6) 17-6 in the first quarter and took a 27-point lead with five minutes remaining.

Canyon 58, Villa Park 51--David Jones scored a game-high 21 points and teammate Ralph Pacheco added 17 for the Comanches (5-5, 10-11), which make the playoffs as the third-place team. Chris Storck scored 15 for Villa Park (1-9).

In the Collegiate League:

St. Margaret’s 69, Walden 44--Chris Cooper scored 15 points to lead the Tartans (8-0, 18-1) at Walden. The Warriors (0-8 in league) led after one quarter, 17-15, before St. Margaret’s pulled away. Mark Flather had 12 points for the Tartans and Mark Campaigne had 11.

In the Pacific Coast League:

Laguna Hills 68, Laguna Beach 51--The Hawks finished third as Mike Smeades had 20 points and 7 rebounds at Laguna Hills. Chris Sheff added 18 points and Rick Kawada had 8 assists. Scott Herdman led the Artists (3-7, 7-16) with 23 points. Laguna Hills is 7-3 and 13-11.

Woodbridge 76, Trabuco Hills 67--Adam Keefe led the Warriors (10-0, 20-5) to the league championship with 30 points and 14 rebounds. Woodbridge led 36-22 at halftime, and its defense held off a Trabuco Hills third-quarter rally. Vince Bryan scored 21 points and 10 rebounds for Woodbridge. The Warriors made 26 for 30 free throws. Trabuco Hills (7-3, 18-5) finished second in league.

Orange 71, Costa Mesa 61--The Mustangs led 35-33 at the half, but the Panthers rallied to outscore them 20-8 in the third quarter at Orange. Dan Adams scored 27 points and had 11 rebounds to lead Orange, and Rusty Olson added 13 points. The Panthers (3-7 and 8-16) finish fifth. The Mustangs are 0-10.

In the Sea View League:

University 71, Saddleback 67 (3 OT)--Saddleback (3-7, 7-15) started the game with an 11-0 run, but the Trojans (6-4, 17-8) tied the score with 1:20 to play. In the third overtime, David Warren, who was called up from the junior varsity team, made four straight free throws in the final minute and Chi Mao added two free throws and a basket for the Trojans. Lasse Glassen had 26 points for University.

In the South Coast League:

El Toro 81, Irvine 71--Bret Johnson scored 26 points and Mack Powell had 21 to lead the Chargers (8-2, 18-8) at home to the school’s first basketball league championship. El Toro, which tied for first with Capistrano Valley, led by two at the half. Eric Speaker added 17 for the Chargers. Mike Herring led Irvine (5-5 in league) with 27 points.

In a nonleague game:

Mary Star of the Sea 65, Orange Lutheran 53--Shawn Bologna scored 18 points to lead Mary Star of the Sea at home. Orange Lutheran (7-15 overall) was led by Jason Neben with 16 points and Gaylord Greene with 14.
