Mater Dei High School soccer Coach Mike Young knew that his team would have to dominate early to beat Ocean View in the first round of the boys’ Southern Section 4-A playoffs Thursday at Mater Dei.

The Monarchs did just that, scoring two goals in the first half and fighting off the Seahawks in the second half to win, 3-0.

Forward John Coggins scored the first goal from eight yards out off an assist from Paul Oldham. Scott Gallegos scored the second off an assist from Sam George with three minutes left in the half.

“We’re quick off the start,” Young said, “and we try to jump on teams right away.”

Ocean View spent most of the second half around the Mater Dei goal. Monarch goalkeeper Mike Reis made 12 saves, including two late in the game that he bobbled and then pounced on, surrounded by Seahawks. Oldham, who had a knee wrapped in tape after a first-half injury, scored the final goal, his 37th of the season.

“In the first half we played very poorly,” Ocean View Coach Paul Kollar said. “That was the difference in the game. We never got into any kind of rhythm or passing pattern. We started to pass in the second half, and things began to click.”
