SOUTHERN SECTION : BASKETBALL PLAYOFFS : OTHER GAMES : Ward Gets 27, but Calabasas Falls to Azusa in Last Seconds

Despite 27 points from senior Steve Ward, Calabasas lost to Azusa, 61-59, on a layup with five seconds left in a Southern Section 2-A playoff game at Calabasas Friday.

Ward’s performance raised his school record for career total points to 1,872. Jon Drezner had 11 points and 18 rebounds for Calabasas (16-9).

Tony McGee scored 23 points, Leon Sherwood had 15 and Bryan Grant scored 12 for Azusa (18-5). Scott Fitzgerald had 8 assists for Calabasas.

1-A DIVISION

Harvard 70, Bishop 45--Harvard used a pressing defense to build a 23-point first-half lead and coasted to the win at home.

Harvard (16-5), a co-champion in the Santa Fe League, was led by Steve Green, who scored 26 points. Mike Lowe, a senior center, had 14 points and 13 rebounds. Charles Patton added 13 points. Bishop (13-10) committed 23 turnovers.

Montclair Prep 71, Aquinas 61--Craig Handschu scored 20 points and John DeRouen added 18 to lead Montclair Prep to the win at home.

Jeff Light scored 14 points for Montclair Prep (17-6). Teammate Dave Sanger had six blocked shots and seven rebounds. Scott Hauser had six assists.

Aquinas (18-7) was led by senior center Eric Baugh’s 25 points, including 16 in the fourth quarter. Armando McQueen added 20 points.

Twentynine Palms 56, L.A. Baptist 50--Victor DeJong had 21 points and 10 rebounds, both game-high totals, and Rocky Ray scored 13 points for host Twentynine Palms,

Twentynine Palms (17-5) led, 42-30, after three quarters, but L.A. Baptist cut the lead to four with 48 seconds left. Mike Wise scored eight points and John Amstutz had six in the fourth quarter for L.A. Baptist (18-6). DeJong scored the game’s final basket with 40 seconds left.

For L.A. Baptist, Mike Null scored 16 points, Wise had 14, Amstutz finished with 12. Steve Kim scored only 2 points but had 15 assists. LA Baptist made 22 field goals in the game.

SMALL SCHOOLS DIVISION

Oakwood 58, Avalon 32--Mitchell Butler had 39 points and 29 rebounds to lead Oakwood to the win at home.

Eric Ledell had 11 assists for Oakwood (18-5). Steve Moran had 13 points for Avalon (12-9).
