Prep Basketball Roundup : Keenan Gets 38, Leads Westlake Upset of Muir

Senior forward Paul Keenan scored a school-record 38 points to lead Westlake High School to an 86-77 upset win over Pasadena Muir Tuesday night in the second round of the Southern Section 4-A basketball playoffs at Westlake, knocking out the defending champions and this year’s No. 2-seeded team.

After being tied at the end of the first quarter, 13-13, Westlake outscored Muir, 28-17, in the second quarter, with Keenan getting 14 points in that span.

The Warriors (19-7) sealed the win by making 12 free throws--all on one-and-one situations--in the last two minutes. Keenan and Rick Welch made 16 of 19 free throws and 21 of 31 shots from the field, and Welch finished with 20 points.

“Rick and I were unconscious,” Keenan said. “Whatever we put up went in.”

Muir, which got 24 points from Kirk Wagner, finished at 20-4.

In other second-round games:

Santa Barbara 65, La Puente Nogales 55--Santa Barbara, the fourth-seeded team in the 4-A, got 24 points and 13 rebounds from Mike Craven, a 6-6, 245-pound center, and never trailed in the game at Nogales. The Dons are 22-2.

Guard Faris Manning scored 17, and forward Marvin Whitlock had 14 points and 14 rebounds for Nogales (18-9).

Fontana 83, Mission Viejo Capistrano Valley 68--For the first time in six years under Coach Mark Thornton, Capistrano Valley has been stopped short of the quarterfinals.

In a 4-A game at Redlands High, center Sean Rooks had 26 points and 13 rebounds to lead Fontana (24-3). He hit three straight baskets when Capistrano Valley (18-9) had pulled to within eight, 59-51, with 6:25 to play, and the Cougars, who have reached the semifinals four of the past five years, never got closer than 10.

Fontana shot 60% from the field (34 of 50). Capistrano Valley hit just 37% (25 of 67).

Lynwood 77, Riverside North 73--Senior guard Adrian Jackson scored 20 points, including three points in the third overtime, as Lynwood, which blew a five-point lead with 30 seconds to play in the second overtime, hung on for the 4-A win at Lynwood.

Senior forward Mark Hill added 14 points for the Knights, who advance with a 21-5 record. North finishes 20-5.

Diamond Bar 56, Compton Dominguez 53--Pat McMann scored 17 to pace a balanced attack, and Mike Schumacher hit two free throws with 11 seconds to play to seal the win for Diamond Bar (23-4) in the 4-A game at Gahr High in Cerritos.

Eric Washington had 18 points and Ronnie Coleman 14 for Dominguez (22-5).

Rolling Hills 60, Brea-Olinda 56--Doug Gehr scored a game-high 24 points to lead the top-seeded team in the 3-A game at Sonora High in La Habra.

Rolling Hills is 24-3, Brea is 18-9.

“It doesn’t get any tougher than this,” Rolling Hills Coach Cliff Warren said. “We had to play our best offensive shooting game of the year to win it.”

Etiwanda 79, Garden Grove Bolsa Grande 76--Bolsa Grande led for most of the game and had a 65-59 lead with 6:35 remaining in the 3-A game at Alta Loma High. But Etiwanda (25-3) outscored Bolsa Grande, 13-1, over the next five minutes to go ahead, 72-66, with 1:35 left.

Etiwanda’s Dion Tolbert was eight for eight from the free-throw line in the last six minutes. Barry Howard led the Eagles with 22 points, and Martel Willis had 19.

Anaheim Magnolia 85, Pomona Ganesha 72--Ganesha, the third-seeded team, came into the 3-A game at Cypress High having averaged 89.5 points in its last two games, but the Giants never got going against Magnolia’s matchup zone. Magnolia is 20-5.

Ganesha finishes 21-5.

Oxnard Santa Clara 51, Arroyo Grande 42--Fred Santana scored 17 points, but it was the Saints’ defense that stole the show in the 2-A game at Santa Clara--they didn’t allow an Arroyo Grande player to score in double figures.

Meanwhile, Santa Clara, the top-seeded team in the 2-A with a 20-4 record, hit 19 of 25 shots from the field (76%), but just 13 of 27 from the free-throw line (48%). Arroyo Grande is 12-13.

Banning 61, San Dimas 53--Forward Dennis Gray scored 26 points, and Tony Hannibal came off the bench to score 10 to lead the Broncos (21-6) in a 2-A game at San Dimas.

Guards Andre Grayson (16) and Roy Wallace (13) were the top scorers for San Dimas (18-6).

Hesperia Christian 80, Boron 57--The top-seeded team in the Small Schools Division advanced to the quarterfinals as guard Mark Loomis hit 11 of 18 shots to finish with a game-high 25 points and added 15 rebounds, 10 steals and 7 assists. Ted Hahs also had 16 points and 12 rebounds, and Mike Jones scored 13 for Hesperia Christian (21-2).

Jeff Seamount and Greg Bohl scored 12 each to lead Boron (14-10).

Big Pine 69, La Canada Ribet Academy 60--Big Pine, No. 2 in the Small Schools at 17-0, fell behind, 21-10, early in the second quarter before coming back for the win at Ribet. Jeff Crechriou scored 25 points and Danny David added 14 for the Warriors.

Dale Sta. Ana had 20 and Maurice Johnson and Max Decesare 15 each for Ribet (17-4).

San Luis Obispo Mission Prep 63, Sepulveda California Christian 40--Center Scott Welden had 28 points to lead the fourth-seeded team in the Small Schools at Notre Dame High in Sherman Oaks.

Mission Prep is 18-4, California Christian 13-9.

North Hollywood Oakwood 55, Templeton 33--Forward Mitchell Butler, a sophomore, added to an already outstanding season by scoring 37 points and grabbing 18 rebounds to lead Oakwood (18-5) in the Small Schools game at Oakwood. Twenty of his points came in the first half, when the Gorillas moved out to a 27-24 lead.

Templeton finishes 15-6.
