OTHER SPORTS : Kuretich Runs Off With CLU Records

Cal Lutheran senior Troy Kuretich set three school records Saturday in a track meet at CSUN. Kuretich ran a 10.72 in the 100 meters, 21.2 in the 200 and registered 24-0 in the long jump.

He won all three events and qualified for the NAIA national meet in each. He also ran the second leg in the 400 relay, which CLU won in 41.85.

Musical chairs: Former CLU Athletic Director Don Green has been named acting athletic director at the school because Dr. Robert Doering is on a five-month sabbatical. Green is the CLU men’s track and cross-country coach.

Hard softball: The Northridge softball team finished second in the Bakersfield tournament over the weekend. The Lady Matadors were beaten twice by Cal Poly Pomona, ranked No. 4 in Division I.

Pitcher Rhonda Wheatley no-hit CSUN in a 4-0 win, then held the Lady Matadors (7-4) to five hits in a tournament-clinching 2-0 win.

Dialing W’s: CSUN swimmer Lisa Dial was named CCAA women’s swimmer of the meet Sunday at the CCAA championships Dial, who won the 1,650-yard freestyle, the 400 individual medley and the 500 freestyle and took sixth in the 200 breast, led CSUN (10-0) to the conference title.

Teeing off: Lee Simpson shot a two-over par 74 to win medalist honors and lead the Mission College men’s golf team to the team title in a Southern California Conference Northern Section mini-tournament Monday at Rancho Park.

The Mission team shot 36-over par 396 for an easy win over Harbor (419), Trade-Tech (422), Antelope Valley (475) and West Los Angeles (478).

Add golf: The Cal State Northridge men’s golf team finished fourth in the University of Arizona Ventana Cup Classic in Tucson on Tuesday. Texas El Paso won the team title, followed by Arizona and Washington. CSUN was led by senior Pat Boyd, who 11th with a 54-hole total of 11-over par 229.

Sideout, Pierce: Ken Stanley doesn’t know whether the Pierce men’s volleyball team will be able to defend its Southern California regional championship, but the Brahmas have started off in that direction.

Pierce won the 15-team Long Beach tournament to open the season two weeks ago and took a 3-0 record into Wednesday night’s match with Golden West.

Leading Pierce is Eric Peters, a sophomore from Taft High who is the team’s only returning starter. Other starters include Joe Sorensen and Ron Dugar, sophomore outside hitters, and a promising setter, freshman Austin Johnson.

Keeping tabs: Samantha Ford, a sophomore formerly of Hart High, pitched a two-hitter and struck out six to lead the UCLA women’s softball team to a 7-1 victory over United States International University last weekend.
