Community College Baseball : Saddleback Starts Quickly, Beats Chaffey, 10-0

Saddleback College, with a seven-run first inning, shut out Chaffey, 10-0, in a nonconference baseball game Saturday at Saddleback.

Chris Latham drove in three runs and scored another with a single and a bases-loaded triple in the first for the Gauchos (4-5). Dave Stevens also drove in three runs with a double for the Gauchos.

Saddleback added three runs in the fifth.

Chaffey starter Robby Corsaro gave up three walks in the first, as 12 Saddleback players batted. The Gauchos had only eight hits in the game.

Starting pitcher Dan Blancett (2-2) got the victory.

Rancho Santiago 21, MiraCosta 12--Rich Gonzales had four hits and three RBIs and Troy Barnhart had three RBIs as the Dons (8-2) routed the Spartans at Santa Ana.

Rancho Santiago broke the game open in the fourth inning, scoring nine runs to take a 15-5 lead. The Dons added six runs in the sixth. Todd Lloyd went for 3 for 3 with two RBIs. Dave Salcido (3-0) pitched five innings for Rancho Santiago, allowing five runs.

In South Coast Conference action:

Golden West 16, Compton 2--The Rustlers got 17 hits in their conference-opening victory at Compton.

Sophomore left fielder Gary Renko went 3 for 3 with five runs scored and three RBIs. Teammate Chip Demato, a sophomore second baseman, was 3 for 5, including a double and four RBIs. Jeff Bryant (2-1) pitched eight innings for the victory. He was relieved by Bill Baird in the ninth. Compton was limited to four hits and committed three errors.

Fullerton 9, Long Beach City 4--The Hornets, leading 4-2, scored five runs in the sixth inning en route to their conference-opening victory at Fullerton. Reggie Brown’s single drove in two runs in the inning for the Hornets (5-3-2).

Fullerton scored three runs in the fourth inning as Andy Ruscitto and Tim Churchill hit back-to-back home runs. Mark Kiefer (1-0) pitched eight innings and struck out eight for Fullerton. Kelly Norried (2-2) was the losing pitcher for Long Beach (3-6)

In the Southwestern Tournament:

Orange Coast 18, Harbor 1--Rex Peters had four RBIs and David Dawson three RBIs as the Pirates (12-3) won the losers’ bracket championship at Los Angeles. Mark Rasmussen went 4 for 5 with two RBIs. Orange Coast scored four runs in the first inning, seven in the fourth and three in the fifth. Jon Dishon (4-1) pitched a complete game, allowing only four hits.
