HIGH SCHOOL HIGHLIGHTS : Sylmar Shuts Out Grant on a 1-Hitter by Woodfin

Grant High’s chances of repeating as City Section baseball champion may be slim this season because the Lancers are playing without ace Rodney Beck, now a pitcher in the Oakland A’s organization, and without the seniors who made last season’s team the best in school history.

But the title of City champion will stay with Grant until its season ends. So, how did Sylmar’s Olonzo Woodfin react when he threw a one-hitter against Grant on Tuesday?

“He pretty much took it in stride,” Sylmar Coach John Klitsner said.

Actually, it was Woodfin’s stride that baffled Grant batters. He struck out 15 and gave up only a single to Mark Taylor as the Spartans opened East Valley League play with an 11-0 win.

Sylmar isn’t the only sound in town. Poly junior Luis Porres has continued to make noise with his bat. Porres, an All-City outfielder last season, had four hits, including a home run, and drove in three runs as Poly routed North Hollywood, 17-6, in an East Valley League game at North Hollywood.

Crespi defeated Chaminade, 15-11, 15-13, 15-8, in a nonleague match. Chris Faucher had 10 kills and Ken Lynch had six for Crespi.
