HIGH SCHOOL HIGHLIGHTS : Laker Brothers Lead Simi Valley to Win

Brothers Tim and Mike Laker each drove in two runs as Simi Valley High defeated Alhambra, 6-3, in the opening round of the El Segundo tournament Friday at Alhambra. Tim Laker drove in Darren Aurand and Joe Gallegos with a triple in the third inning for the game’s first runs. Scott Sharts then singled to score Laker.

In the fifth inning, Mike Laker doubled to drive in Darrin Lloyd and Marcus Lockwood. Mark Bustamante singled to score Laker and give Simi Valley (1-0) a 6-1 lead.

Sharts pitched the first five innings, struck out three, walked two and gave up three earned runs for the victory. In the sixth inning, Alhambra (0-1) scored twice on a double by Mario Molina, a triple by Tony Despart and a single by Jason Perales.

Paul Frias relieved Sharts and retired the side to end Alhambra’s rally. Frias did not allow a hit in two innings. He struck out two and walked one. Simi Valley advances to today’s second round.

BASEBALL

Donovon Wallace’s ground out drove in Ty Powell with the winning run in bottom of the sixth as Chatsworth defeated St. Bernard, 2-1, in a first-round game in the Westside tournament. Powell led off the inning with a single, stole second and advanced to third on a ground out by Art Lowe before scoring. Chatsworth (1-0) had tied the game in the fifth inning when John Dunn walked, stole second, and scored on a single by Eric Niece. Pierre Amado (1-0) pitched six innings, gave up three hits and one run, walked one and struck out five to pick up the win. . . . Ventura’s Dave Eggert led off the second inning with his first home run of the season as Ventura scored four runs and defeated Camarillo, 7-3, in a first-round game of the Ventura tournament. Shane Espitra (1-0) recorded a complete-game victory. Espitra struck out eight and walked none. Camarillo’s Jimmy Walsh (0-1) surrendered five runs and nine hits in four innings. Camarillo (0-1) is scheduled to play Buena at Ventura on today at 2 p.m.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL

Ken Lynch had 12 kills and four blocks and teammate Chris Faucher had nine kills as Crespi (2-0) defeated Murphy, 15-13, 8-15, 15-8, 15-13, in a nonleague match at Crespi. . . . Jason Jenny had seven kills, Doug Way had four kills, and Don Benson had four digs as Viewpoint (1-0) defeated Harbor Christian, 15-12, 15-10, 15-7, in a nonleague match at Viewpoint. Viewpoint jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the third game and was never threatened.
