Poway and Valhalla high schools played for two halves and four overtime periods to decide the San Diego Section boys’ 3-A soccer championship--and left it undecided.
The teams played to a 2-2 tie and were declared co-champions under a section rule enacted after the end of last season that prohibits the use of shoot-outs to decide championship matches.
Poway (18-1-6) took the lead on the first half on a goal by John Ashworth. The Titans extended their lead early in the second half when Tim Gourdazi scored.
However, Valhalla (20-2-1) struck back quickly, scoring two goals in 10 minutes. Scott Hargrove took a pass from Toby Taitano and drove it into the net. Taitano then scored the tying goal.
In the other championship games:
2-A BOYS
University City 4, La Jolla 1--Chris Morgan scored two goals to lead University City (19-3-3) to the title. Armin Munvar and Yari Allnut also scored for University City. Eric Ople scored La Jolla’s only goal early in the second half.
2-A GIRLS
San Pasqual 2, USDHS 1 (OT)--Heather Armstrong scored nine minutes into the first overtime period to win it for San Pasqual (19-5-1). San Pasqual took the lead in the first half, but University of San Diego High School (18-3-4) quickly tied the match on a goal by Katie Branigan.
